- Since 2009, Kaplan has been involved in a series of lawsuits with his nephew, Guma Aguiar, over the division of money from the 2007 sale of Leor.[1][2]
- In 2009, Leib Tropper, the rabbi of an orthodox Jewish charity that Kaplan co-founded, was found to have been soliciting sex from would-be converts.[3][4][5]
- In January 2009, Kaplan received a Wells notice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission related to "impermissible payments" of $125,000 to government officials by executives at a South American subsidiary.[6]
