Eurovision Song Contest Coefficient

The Eurovision Song Contest Coefficient, or ESC Coefficient for short, is a ranking system for countries competing in the Eurovision Song Contest. It is based on a modified version of the UEFA coefficient which is used for European football.

Introduced in 2019, the system uses the average points from a country's Eurovision entries of the previous 5 years.

The average points are calculated using the total points, including semi-finals in 1996 and from 2004, which are divided by the amount of voting countries before 2016 and by the voting juries and televote results since 2016. Each coefficient divides each of the average points total, with the most recent year having the most effect whilst the earliest year has the least. The calculation is then multiplied by ten to give the coefficient.

Using the current voting system, countries can be tracked back to the 1975 contest due to the implementation of the voting system that year. The first eligible coefficient was created for the Eurovision Song Contest 1979.
