Fodens Limited of Sandbach in Cheshire, were the pre-eminent builder of steam wagons during the first 35 years of the 20th century. They built their first prototype steam lorry 1898 and the final steam powered vehicle was sold in July 1934, between these two dates they built over 7000 steam powered vehicles - far more than any of their contemporary competitors. The company also built traction engines, road locomotives and showmans engines in lesser numbers as well as associated tackle include threshing machines and trailers.

The End of Steam
By the start of the 1930's Edwin Snr's son Edwin who was a Foden board member had become convinced that the future of the lorry building industry lay in diesel power. The rest of the Foden board did not agree and he resigned along with his son Dennis to setup ERF.
