St. Maximillian Kolbe Catholic High School, also known as St. Max, is a high school in AuroraOntarioCanada. The school opened in September 2009 and is administered by the York Catholic District School Board. The founding principal was Domenic Scuglia and the founding vice-principal was Rocchina Antunes.

St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS's patron saint is Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a Franciscan priest from Poland that was incarcerated and executed at the Auschwitz concentration camp as a political prisoner during World War II.[1](this section is already included in the original published article)

Background

When the school opened in September 2009, there were less than 800 students in grades 9 and 10. The school opened its academic wing on time, but property development complications led to a delay of the opening of the cafeteria, technology, and athletic wings, which opened for the 2nd semester of the 2009/2010 school year.

In the 2010/2011 school year, St. Max had students in grades 9, 10, and 11. By the following school year, the school was teaching curriculum for grades 9 to 12 and graduated its first senior class in June 2012. The following June, St. Max graduated its first class of students that attended the institution from grades 9 to 12. (this is also included in the original article I just added a heading)

Historical overview

Prior to the school opening, the cornerstone committee was created as a form of communication between the students and the administration. The committee was constructed in September 2008. The committee communicated with future students and together they created the school crest, school insignia, school, prayer, and athletic mascot. The Principal also asked the committee for input in the school uniform and the cafeteria.[2]

Father Lucjan Krolikowski is a priest who worked along St. Maximilian Kolbe in World War II. In December of 2008 the founding Principal, Mr. Domenic Scuglia, learned Father Lucjan Krolikowski's connection with St. Maximilian Kolbe. In March, a group of future students went to visit him in Chicopee Massachusetts, near Boston, to learn about the patron saint. A week later a group of students visited the Museum of Tolerance in New York which was funded by Simon Weisenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies'. A third group, in the summer of 2009, went to Poland to learn more about St. Maximilian Kolbe and his life experiences and time in concentration camps.[2]

School Motto

“CHOICE NOT CHANCE DETERMINES DESTINY”.

The school's motto was chosen in honour of St. Maximilian Kolbe. The school is committed to leading and teaching young people with the reminder and presense of God in our daily lives and actions. The motto illustrates St. Maximilian Kolbe's Catholic teaching that our choices will lead us to our destiny and always rememeber God in our Catholic roots. [3]

Prayer of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic High School

Loving God

As we welcome your gift of this new day,

Let us accept the red crown, so we shall not be defeated by hatred.

Let us take the white crown, so we shall be pure in heart and mind.

Help us to use tolerance in our words and actions.

Let us focus on faith, take time to forgive, and be thankful.

As we come together in this school community,

Jesus Christ we turn to you, may you guide us on the path you have put before us;

May we love and learn from one another, work together, worship together, and play together.

Let us use Father Kolbe’s words to give us strength, perseverance and courage.

We ask this through the intercession of your loving Mother Mary and our patron, St. Maximilian Kolbe.

Amen

School Crest

The school crest was created by joining the creative works of four different students from associate schools; Jordan Weir from Our Lady of Grace Catholic School, John-Salvatore Falcone from St. Joseph, Aurora, Kaitlyn Balkovec and Victoria Garritano both from Cardinal Carter all contributed to the final crest.[2]

It is divided into three sections which represents the Holy Trinity

The first triad contains the Franciscan symbol of St. Francis on the cross showing the stigmata – St. Maximilian Kolbe belonged to the Franciscan order of priests.  The second triad contains the two crowns which are symbolic of the apparition. As a child Kolbe had a vision where our Holy Mother appeared to him offering a red crown representing martyrdom or a white crown representing purity and to choose one.  St. Maximilian Kolbe chose both crowns which are symbolic of how his life was lived.  The third and final triad contains a book which represents the Holy Scriptures, the Bible, the Word of God revealed to humankind.  It can also represent the whole world of learning and academics.  The school motto is emblazoned at the top of the shield.  Finally, the crest is supported by the powerful statement in Polish – “Bóg Mieszka Poród Nas”–meaning "God is amoung us".[3]
