Tan Sri Dr. Palan is a Malaysian Indian and the Chairman of SMRT Holdings Berhad.He has served as a Director of the Human Resources Development Fund, Malaysia, an appointment made by the Minister of Human Resources, Government of Malaysia.

Early life and education

Palan was born to Pudupatti PRMP Ramanathan Chettiar and Sethuramayee Achi. He grew up in Melaka and attended the La Salle brothers run primary school at St. Francis Institution, [1], Malaysia and his secondary school in Jesuit institution Campion Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, Tamil Nadu, South India. He completed his tertiary studies from the University of Madras (a pre university degree from Bishop Heber College, Bachelors in Science, Chemistry from New College) and a Masters degree in Arts with a specialisation in Medical and Psychiatry from the Madras School of Social Work. Later he completed his Masters in Psychology of Work from the University of Leicester, UK. An alumnus of the Harvard [Business School], he completed his human resources and management studies there. He is currently a Fellow at the University of Ballarat pursuing a Ph.D. in Vocational Education and Training (VET).

On his paternal side, his grandfathers (Theradiyar family) were in the plantations business in Burma and Malaya. Eventually, the family decided to migrate to then Malaya and now Peninsular Malaysia. His maternal grandfather was Kopanapatti MPM Narayanan Chettiar, a wealthy industrialist from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India. In partnership with his brother in law Shri A Nagappa Chettiar, the famed India Leather Corporation was formed and Indian leather was exported to all over the world.

Career

Palan had chosen a non conventional route to study and specialise in human resources development. The British Institute of Learning & Development, U.K. accorded him their highest level of membership by making him a Fellow of the Institute. As an entrepreneur he took his startup company public by listing SMRT Holdings Berhad on Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad, Malaysia. The company has offices in Malaysia, Bahrain, India and partners in Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and the United States of America.

An author of over 12 books and several articles on Learning, Human Resources and Management subjects, he is the recipient of the Certified Speaking Professional award, the highest earned award from the National Speakers Association of the United States of America, He authored the book The Magic of Making Training FUN! and Competency Management: a practitioner’s guide to set the best practices in developing people.

Palan is a recipient of the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP), which carries the title Dato’ from DYMM Paduka Seri Sultanate of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan and the Johan Bintang Kenyalang (JBK) from the Governor of Sarawak, Abang Muhammad Salahuddin,Sarawak.

Family and personal life

Palan was born to Pudupatti PRMP Ramanathan Chettiar and Sethuramayee Achi. He is married to Kamatchi Malayandi (Kamu), daughter of Aranmanai Siruvayal Mr & Mrs Malayandi from Kuantan, Malaysia. They have two sons Maha and Subu and a daughter Shrieeya. His mom celebrated her eightieth birthday recently. His siblings include two brothers and four sisters, the second sister passed away due to post-partum hemorrhage. His father passed away at a relatively young age of 51. On his paternal side, his grandfathers (Theradiyar family) were in the plantations business in Burma and Malaya. His maternal grandfather was Kopanapatti MPM Narayanan Chettiar, a wealthy industrialist from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India.
