Shelbourne AFC was set up in 2005 to compete in the Dublin Amateur Football League, and are registered with the League as Shelbourne FC (AFL). The team were formed by a Group of Shelbourne supporters, and continues to be primarily made up from "reds-men".

Shelbourne's first two seasons saw the newly formed team struggle to be cometitive, finishing bottom of the league in their first season, before securing a mid table finish in their 2nd year. The team was managed in hte early days by firstly, Joe Nutley, before player Paul Reilly took over the management of the sider. In 2007/08, under the management of Mick O'Reardon, the team improved, and earned promotion to Division 1, following a 2nd place finish. The 2008/09 season saw O'Reardon continue to bring the team forward, and in their first season in Division 1, Shels again finished 2nd in the league, winning a 2nd place play-off against Columba Rovers 3-1, after the two clubs had finished level on points behind league champions Beaumont Athletic.
