History
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton League was formed in 2006 as the “Coal City Rollers” and was then changed to the present league name in 2009. During this last decade, our league has established ourselves as the premier roller derby league for the northeastern PA area.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Roller Derby League is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), which was founded in 2005. WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women's flat track roller derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. The governing philosophy of the WFTDA is “by the skaters, for the skaters.” Female skaters are primary owners, managers, and/or operators of each member league and of the association. Operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. All WFTDA member leagues have a voice in the decision-making process and agree to comply with the governing body's policies.
League structure
Wilkes-Barre Scranton Roller Derby (WBSRD) has a two-travel teams within the league, and also three interleague teams, composed of member of the three home teams, that play against teams from other leagues. The Roller Radicals "All-Stars", as the league's A team, represent WBSRD in WFTDA interleague competitions that count towards WFTDA rankings.
The skaters, referees, and other league volunteers have the option to adopt derby names for their uniforms, league activities, and other league business. Members choose their own names which they may start using after an initial league probationary period.
Teams
Home teams
In 2017, the league expanded to a three-home team structure. Most WBSRD skaters compete on home teams, which practice together and jointly manage the league. The home team designations do not necessarily reflect the residences of the skaters on a particular team, A few skaters do not compete on a home team, and only skate as All-Stars.
