Animated series

An animated spin-off of the live-action television series was announced as early as 2013 after the brand was sold by the Nine Network to Asian equity group Asiasons.[2][3] The company had plans to launch a cartoon related to Hi-5 by the end of 2013.[3]

The brand was later consolidated under new business platform Tremendous Entertainment Group (TEG) in 2014 after the equity fund was sold.[4][5] The untitled cartoon was listed as a business venture for 2015; it would contain 52 episodes and feature the Hi-5 cast in a superhero-style story, "solving problems with teamwork and special powers".[5][6] The series was developed through a deal with Netflix.[citation needed] In May 2015, the working title for the series was reported as Hi-5 Superfly, to be aimed at children aged six to twelve, an older bracket than the target audience of the original live-action series.[a][7] The cartoon would feature the members of the group at the time providing voices for characterised versions of themselves.[b][7] Other working titles included Hi-5 Superfive[10] and Hi-5 Supadrive, with early animated designs of the characters revealed through promotional material.[11] The animated series was conceptualised but didn't go into production.

In September 2018, the Australian production office of the Hi-5 brand was closed and the franchise was relocated to Singapore.[12] It was reported that an animated series was being produced in association with an unnamed broadcaster.[12] The series was still in development by July 2019.[13] In September, an open call went out for writers and animators based in Malaysia to work on the series.[14] In 2020, animation company FrameMotion Studio received a digital content grant to produce the 3D-animated Hi-5 Super 5 series.[15][16] In 2021, Hi-5 Super 5 and Jupsters were listed as upcoming animation projects from Tremendous Entertainment;[17][18] Malaysian company Fly Studio listed Hi-5 Jupsters as one of their animated series in development in 2021.[19]
