Controversy

Popular Beauty YouTubers are a part of one of the most controversial community on Youtube due to the frequent dramas they are involved in. Most known for their dramas are: Jeffrey Star, James Charles, Tati Westbrook, Shane Dawson, NikkieTutorials, Jaclyn Hill, Manny MUA, Laura Lee, Jackie Aina, Nikita Dragun, Gabriel Zamora, Zoella and more [1]. The drama involves several cosmetic brands and information from YouTubers' private life.

2014

Zoella releases her first ever book: 'Girl Online'. After receiving critical feedback, she admits that the book had been written by a ghostwriter and not her. Overwhelmed by the amount of the negative tweets from her fans she decides to take a short break from the internet[2].

2017

James Charles tweets about going to Africa and shares his worries about catching Ebola. Immediately after posting the tweet, James meets with his fans disapproval who say that the tweet is racist and highly stereotypical. In his apology he claimed that it was a joke and also called Africa a country [3].

2018

Gabriel Zamora has posted a picture of himself with three different beauty YouTubers: Laura Lee, Manny MUA and Nikita Dragun with a caption that suggest that all four of them are doing better off without someone. Shortly after, turns out that the person that he has meant was Jeffree Star, thus after the release of Shane Dawson's 'Secret World of Jeffree Star' series on YouTube, the fall out of their friendship becomes public. The reason why the friendship has ended remains unknown[4].

After one successful collaboration between Jaclyn Hill and Morphe, Beauty Youtuber has decided to release more beauty products with the brand. The product developed during this collaboration was the 'Vault Collection' including 4 eyeshadow palettes. After receiving unfavourable feedback from different beauty YouTubers about the palettes, Morphe has decided to reschedule the launch. The second launch was questionable to the consumers due to the same batch codes, and stickers being placed over the ingredients list, however, Jaclyn and Morphe have addressed this issue claiming that they reused packagings from the previous launch[5].

2019

Jaclyn Hill announces that she has been working on a specific makeup product for almost two years and is very excited to release it. The product turns out to be a lipstick. Jaclyn has sent PR packages to some of the most popular beauty YouTubers asking for a review on her products. In the video reviews, YouTubers show that some of the lipsticks look like they are old and have hair inside of them. Jaclyn did not want to address the issue at first but after a few days she has offered refunds for everyone who has purchased her products and is unsatisfied with its' quality[6].

2021

James Charles posts a video where he addresses the accusations that he was texting underage boys and sending inappropriate pictures, he also apologises and calls himself 'reckless'. Morphe's consumers called out the brand for not taking any actions after James has published the video. The brand finally speaks out and announces to split their ways with James Charles[7]. Origin

First person ever to use this hashtag is a twitter user MikeCalimbas, he used the hashtag #MondayMotivation in response to his friend tweeting a Picasso quote on March 30th, 2009. The hashtag did not gain popularity till 2015, when ChetanWeb, another Twitter user has replied to Mike saying that he is the first person on Twitter using this specific hashtag. #MondayMotivation has gained its popularity due to multiple marketing campaigns and spreading it across different fitness groups on social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook[8].

Popularity

In 2011, a fitness group 'Monday Motivation' has been created on Facebook. The aim of the group was to motivate other users by posting fitness advices, motivational quotes and transformation pictures followed by individual stories about the transformation and using the #MondayMotivation hashtag[9].

In 2015, #MondayMotivation has gained its' popularity after several articles and people on Twitter mentioning it more frequently. In that same year in April, HuffPost has published an article entirely focused on the hashtag, the reason was that people have started to notice that the hashtag's popularity is growing. The article shows popular influencers using the hashtag and also examples of how to use #MondayMotivation[10]. Popular accounts on Twitter also have started spreading the hashtag. On April 13th, FitnessPlanet tweeted: 'Actually, we're not really sure if this is true, but it sure sounds right. #MondayMotivation' followed by an image that says 'Laughter is clinically proven to make Mondays better.'[11]. On that same day SumAll tweeted: '"May your coffee be strong and your Monday be short." #MondayMotivation'[12].

In 2016, on the 31st of October, an article questioning how effective the #mondaymotivation was at actually to motivating people was published by The New Statesman[13] This was done by interviewing psychologists and siting academic articles proving that posting quotes to social media is a sign of lower intelligence.

In 2019, Instagram has had 15.3 million posts using #MondayMotivation. Many of Instagram's #MondayMotivation posts are linked to fitness posts or quotes. On April 29th, nicoleta.nb posted a fitness photo which gained over 100 likes in a day with the help of the Instagram hashtag[14]. The following day, Instagram user by the name Anthony O'Neal posted text reading "Detox your timeline, your page, your home, your refrigerator, under your counters, your closet, your ride, your phone, your life & mind" which has collected over 2,000 likes in a day[15]. Twitter user CaleWeissman retweeted on April 29th a #MondayMotivation post that has now been removed by Chase Bank and it said this: "extremely cool tweet here from a bank worth $400B that charges anywhere from $2.50 and $5 for individual ATM fees and $34 per overdraft - both of which are taxes on poor people"[16]. The Chase’s tweet leads the reader to believe that people prioritize things like buying coffee at Starbucks and taking Ubers over saving money, which received heavy backlash from twitter users. This, in turn sparked a response from Elizabeth Warren who tweeted, "@Chase: why aren’t customers saving money? Taxpayers: we lost our jobs/homes/savings but gave you a $25b bailout Workers: employers don’t pay living wages Economists: rising costs + stagnant wages = 0 savings Chase: guess we’ll never know Everyone: seriously? #MoneyMotivation"[17]. The tweet gained over 22,200 retweets and 77,100 likes in a single day. Later the same day, Chase tweeted, "Our #MondayMotivation is to get better at #MondayMotivation tweets. Thanks for the feedback Twitter world"[18]. The tweet received over 150 retweets and 1,200 likes in a day. Sarah.Rootek (talk) 15:36, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

As contrary to popular belief, over the last few years many famous beauty gurus have caused outrageous controversial stir amongst the YouTube beauty community. All the way from James Charles and Tatti Westbrooks to Jeffree Star and Kat Von D; Feuds within the community have been appearing from every direction and cancel culture has never been so popular. Accusations against these stars vary from racism to bullying to inappropriate messages to friendships falling out and the fans are not accepting it. The intense back lash from the Youtubers mistakes have caused viral news spreading along other platforms such as social media, the newspapers and magazine articles where the exposure is brutal, thus causing influencers to take a step back from the limelight to deal with the response and eventually apologise for their mistakes. As you can see, nearly every year a major Youtuber gets ‘cancelled’ and called out by the public for shady and scandalous behaviour. A popular name that keeps reoccurring within the community is James Charles, as with such a large following of 25 million subscribers comes with even larger scrutiny of his every action. Along his career on YouTube starting in 2016 up until now, accusations have kept slowing appearing along the way; to this very day he has had his largest allegation as of yet which is ‘sexting underaged boys, inappropriate photos.’ As a major influence and role model within the online world, serious consequences have taken action such as the brand Morphe has terminated their partnership with the young YouTuber.SelinaD98 (talk) 13:43, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Not only does the hashtag work as a marketing strategy accelerating the time frame in which the posts or tweets reach a larger audience, it also works at creating a community. #MondayMotivation has become a largely popular quote in the online world, where everyone feels involved and can use it. It has become much larger than just a marketing tool, originally created on Instagram, and now has a social aspect. For example, by following the hashtag on Instagram or Twitter where there are constant updates of new accounts using that hashtag every time you refresh the page. This community bubble has created an environment where you come to rest your mind and take in encouraging, positive and supportive quotes which can boots your mood instantaneously or you can provide a new hashtag and help others out. Some examples on Twitter of brands, celebrities or clubs contributing to the hashtag include NASA, Dance Mom Holly Fraizer, USA Swimming and Carrie Underwood, which ranges from fitness to space to gratitude quotes. Social media is a great tool to spark conversations and is powerful enough to engage in multiple conversations at once. Therefore, the hashtag trends fall right into the laps of social media users and provides an enjoyable way to interact with others, in more unique ways than just text. Within just minutes a hashtag could go viral and trend via Twitter as roughly 500 million tweets are tweeted per day, the ability to gain visibility and increase awareness amongst users around the world is extremely fast.SelinaD98 (talk) 16:40, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
