I re-added the image because it's our policy that fair use covers / posters are allowed (and often encouraged) in movie articlse. I don't know what "Greenlantern" means but if you have a more fitting cover image feel free to upload it. ^ The one in red displayed as the same Green Lantern photo (as the large one, only minimized). I'm confused as to why it does not show like that now when I look at the edit history section.

There was a green lantern photo there (in fact, two ie the large one as well but that was already removed). The vandal pasted one at the top (the large one) and another right where the theatrical poster was. The large one was removed, but when I looked at the page there was one being shown as the "poster". I don't know why it does not show correctly anymore in the history section, but I'm telling you the truth. Wikipedia does not allow 2 images to have the same name.

From what get of it, I think there was something wrong with my browser's page/image display/connection (delay?) and there was something wrong with my web browser loading the page images at the time. But I am not sure at all for the exact reason. I apologize for the inconvenience and misassumption, but don't think I removed it intentionally. I swear I'm not lying. Ah, I understand. You can change the image (under the same title) and some vandal probably uploaded the Green Lantern image but it was reverted. It was reverted on the image page (Image:The-passion-of-the-christ.jpg). You can see a bunch of "Reverted to earlier revision" and an admin probably deleted the Green Lantern revision since it was vandalism. If that happens again--that an image changes without someone changing the title of the image in the article go to the image page and check to see if earlier versions are of the proper image and then revert to the right one. • Hi. The Will Smith photo, labeled as "promo" is also a film screenshot. That should not be included there in the Will Smith article as the usage of this {{ film-screenshot}}is not fair use. This article isn't "for identification and critical commentary on the film and its contents" but should be rather placed on the "Hitch" article. Same goes for the other 2 pictures regarding their fair use restrictions in their license.

Thank you for your note - the item in question is low-res album cover art, etc., and meets the Fair Use standard on Wikipedia thereto...at least that's my understanding...I have added the tag below to the item in question, so that the complete tag now reads (sample). I followed the guidelines/forms at the file upload site, but the auto-tagging isn't complete, obviously.

• Hi Tvccs. That is good. All you need is a source (link/site) from where you got the album photo (unless you submitted the photo by a scanner) and a fair use rationale. It says so on the license tag you are using:

"To the uploader: please add a detailed fair use rationale for each use, as described on Wikipedia:Image description page, as well as the source of the work and copyright information."

For the Fair Use Rationale [3], you must state why the image is permitted under Fair Use. If you don't some editor might add this tag found here. If you want you can say something like:

Fair Use Rationale

1. . This image only helps illustrate the subject (album) in question and is low resolution.
2. . It does not limit the copyright owner's rights to market or sell the work in any way.
3. . The image is only being used in an informative way and should not detract from the original work.

Fair use rationale for Image:Pacsnoopsuge.jpg

I have provided a NEW rationale for the image in question. When it was first uploaded the only part that needed answering was on the basis of where did the promotional image come from under free use. I stated that it came from Vibe Magazine. The Rationale I now have provided lists it as an Historical photograph due to it's relavancy to the career of the famous artists and the famous company in question, seeing as it was taken at the peak for both. I also listed it as a promotional photograph seeing as it was that when the photo was first published. Udstyle, 11 September 2006

Help

Hi. I need some more clarification about this fair-use image thing. This is confusing me, even though I have already read several pages regarding Fair Use. My problem stems from Johny Depp's article. The article is riddled with screenshots from several of the actor's films, yet they seem to be there to serve a purely decorative purpose in my opinion.

The "fair use tag" on the all of the images'(movie screenshots) page states it should only be used to add critical commentary and identification of the film and its contents, yet the article for Johny Depp does not add plot summary/spoilers/important production notes (filming locations etc..) or anything that is "critical" to the screenshots in relation to their films. I have removed some of them in the past and they have suddenly appeared again.

Please clarify if the removal of those screenshot images (for the reason I stated above) are justified or incorrect. Also, please do look at the Johnny Depp article to see for yourself. Thanks. ResurgamII 20:49, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I'll leave the helpme tag because I don't have any definitive answer to offer and I'm sure other wikipedians who deal daily with images know better, but I think the concept of "fair use" is fairly open to interpretation, I wouldn't worry about movie screenshots, I can't imagine a distributor seeing them as copyright infringement ever.

One thing though, if you find images that violate copyrights, they need to be deleted, not merely removed from one article. See Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion, Wikipedia:Copyright problems, Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. Equendil Talk 00:24, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Generally, film screenshots are copyrighted, and can only be used on Wikipedia on the movie page itself. Not 100% sure, but that's my understanding. Hence, ditto above regarding leaving the helpme tag. Daniel.Bryant 01:08, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Daniel is correct. A movie screenshot is to illustrate the movie in question, not the actor/tress. If the article is too littered with images, post a note on the talk page about your intent to remove them, and then do so if there's no big deal made of it. If there is, you can ask again for users to look at it. The only reason I say don't be too bold in such a removal is that it is a popular article, and as fair warning you will probably receive heat even if concensus is to clean up the images. CCTV 7 image and other CCTV images

Hi... All of the CCTV logos are from the Lyngsat website like the other ones that were already there for CCTV 1, 4, and 9. I was just following convention. What do I need to do to make sure that the images stay there? Best regards, --Jjc104 01:15, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

• Hi Jjc104. You simply add a fair use rationale (See here). I didn't see other ones for the CCTV because I only look at the image file list randomly.

Because you have the logo (I'll cut you a break), add this under a header called "Fair Use Rationale" on the image's main page:

Fair Use Rationale

1. It is a low resolution.
2. The photo is only being used for informational purposes.
3. The logo's inclusion in the article adds significantly to the article because it shows the subject of this article (the company).

The above is only a general example; for what information to be included in this entry you can review the description of fair use and access the ten-point review process used in making a decision about whether it could possibly be applied in Wikimedia here. The information should be as specific as possible, i.e. why you need to use the image as part of the article. Remember to put any information about the copyright owner on the image page after you upload the image and mark it "fair use." The rationale text should be mentioned in the actual article so that it is part of the article and anyone editing the article can see it but it is in the text not the talk page. It can also be mentioned on the talk page for a discussion with other Wikipedia contributors. Adding this information is no guarantee that the image will not be later removed, but it will demonstrate a rationale to others that you may have a valid justification for including "fair use" materials that can be used under the GFDL.

Remember there is no "general rule" about fair use, each "fair use" must be explained and a rationale must be established for that specific use (i.e. every page that uses the image will have a distinct rationale for using the image on that page even though fair use is claimed on the image page).

P.S Removed that 'no rationale' template after you add the appropiate text to the image. Make sure also that all images you upload have this fair use rationale. ResurgamII 01:36, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

I dont understand what rationale is needed? I used the {{logo}} tag as is used on images ranging from Image:Tescologo.svg to Image:Microsoft logotype.png.

What rationale should I provide? How come this images dont have a rationale? Maybe its just my naivety, but if you let me know Ill provide the necc info.

• - Hi Tfoxton, a rationale is a generally short (and listed) explanation on why the image you are using is considered fair use. Please see here in this section for examples. I know this is a bit of an annoyance, but we must adhere to Wikipedia policies (the folks are a bit sensitive on copyright topics). An example for a fair use rationale for a logo (you may copy and paste this onto the image's page):

Tfoxton, please do the same for all fair use images you upload or for those other logos as well. I did not see the other logos with no rationale because I patrol the recent uploaded file list randomly.

what are you talking about? there is no need for fair use rationale in movie posters! There was the legal mention anyway with copyright holder, what do you need more for a such file? I have tagged the image as a publicity shot - it's from her agent, released to the BBC for publicity purposes for the show that the BBC was releasing on BBC3. what do you want mor in Image:Moore_dgm.jpg? Is kinda clear that the image is for identification of the character (as I said on the my last edit, erased by you). I added a reason, you erased and then came saying "if you take the box off again without a reason, I will tell my mo... the admnistration".
