Take 9, also referred as to Ryan Gall's Five[1], were an English rock band formed in 1959 in Liverpool, England[2]. Lead vocalist Nicholas Matthews and manager Ryan Gall served as the group's leaders, producers and co-songwriters. Their first popular singles were All The Way, Just Take It, In My Heart and I Threw Away. The classic line-up consisted of: Nicholas Matthews, Matt Holm, Samuel Clarkson, Jeff Harish and Jimmy Hanlon. Jeff was dismissed from the group for unknown reasons and commited suicide a month after his dismissal, he was then replaced by Patrick "Pat" Pearson[3]. In 1961 two months after Jeff's death, they released their first top-ten single Old Friend, which peaked at No. 5 in the United States. Their other UK top-ten hits include Eddie Slam, Good Ol' Camden, Say It's True. On October 18, 1962, Ryan Gall died in a car-crash under the influence of alcohol[4], because of this the band were retreating and released fewer songs than usual. The last song that could chart was Love Twister, which peaked at no. 14 in the UK. On February 22, 1963, Nicholas Matthews and Pat Pearson were murdered by an unidentified assailant, making Matt Holm, Jimmy Hanlon and Samuel Clarkson the only ones left in the band[5]. On February 27, 1963, the remaining members announced the break-up due to the many casualties they had. Samuel Clarkson would die eight years later due to a brain tumor, making Hanlon and Holm the last surviving members[6].
The original line-up consisted of: Nicholas Matthews (bass and lead vocalists), Jimmy Hanlon (bass and back-up vocals), Andrew Baron (drums, percussion), Chris Thomas (guitars, bass and back-up vocals) and Timothy Braten (keyboards and back-up vocals). Baron was fired, Thomas and Braten left before the classic line-up was made[7].
