HISTORY

The founder of GAY45 is Răzvan Ion, a professor of critical thinking and a queer tech activist.

In 1993 any queer magazine needs it to tag itself with Gay (Gay Krant, Gai Pied, Gay Globe, Gay News, etc.) to make clear the target of the publication and the community to identify easily with the media outlets working for the LGBT+.

We loved and we love vinyl disc music for the authenticity of the sound. 45 is 45 rpm – the speed a vinyl is rotated. So… GAY45.

The original name and magazine GAY45 was, probably, the first gay magazine printed and distributed in East Europe. It was published in 1993. Our platform tries to restore and improve the fabulous ideas of GAY45 almost 30 years later in a larger global context.

GAY45.eu was established with the aim of providing a platform for queer voices and creative expression. The magazine quickly gained recognition for its unique approach, combining traditional journalism with modern technology, including the use of AI. This innovative approach has helped GAY45.eu attract a diverse readership from around the world.

READERSHIP AND IMPACT

Since its inception, GAY45.eu has grown significantly, boasting over 200,000 readers at a moment. The magazine has received various accolades for its contributions to the queer community and its innovative use of technology in journalism.

CONTENT AND FEATURES

GAY45.eu covers a wide range of topics relevant to the queer community, including art, culture, politics, and personal stories. The magazine is known for its high-quality content and its commitment to representing diverse voices within the queer community.

EDITORIAL TEAM

The editorial team at GAY45 is composed of individuals who are passionate about queer issues and creative expression. The team is dedicated to maintaining the magazine’s high standards of journalism and ensuring that it remains a vital resource for the queer community.

Since 2023, the editor-in-chief is Miruna Tiberiu and the managing editor is Jude Jones.

SCHOOL FOR QUEER JOURNALISM

All the profit resulted after we pay our award-winning writers, the administrative team, the software, hardware, domains and technical stuff are used for Queer Journalism Campus. The magazine wants to be more than a journal, but also a school for queer journalism.

GAY45 was founded in April 1993 in Romania. It was created in response to Article 200, a section of the Penal Code of Romania that criminalised homosexual relationships. The magazine aimed to change public "mentality" towards homosexuality and promote an integrated European identity.

In its original print format, GAY45 survived two issues, circulated mainly in Bucharest with a run of a few thousand copies. Due to the homosexual nature of the publication, it was distributed manually.

The first issue consisted focussed primarily on Article 200 and those persecuted by the law, but also commented on the HIV crisis and translated foreign-language articles on homosexuality into Romanian for local audiences.
