Saab Training Systems AB headquarters is located in Huskvarna, Sweden and is a subsidiary of Saab AB that specializes in military and security training systems. They also have offices in Sockholm and Helsingborg and Subsidiary companies are located in the USA, UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada. Saab Training Systems AB is one of the world-leading companies in military training systems.[1] The systems they provide are modular and scalable, mobile or stationary, and can be customized for any training requirement – from the individual soldier up to the highest tactical level. Their training systems cover things as basic gunnery and skills training and tactical training in instrumented combat training facilities.[2]

History

  • Saab Training Systems AB has its origins in 1945 as a department within Saab AB in Linköping, Sweden that developed an air target hit director.

  • Later, in the 1960’s they began the development of target equipment for the army. Target mechanisms with popup targets and accessories was produced. They were all controlled by radio AM systems.

  • In the1970’s they developed their first laser simulator: BT 39 and then came BT 41. The Saab AA Gunfire Simulator BT 39 anti-aircraft artillery simulator was a one-way system with passive reflector units on the target. The sequence of the reflections made it possible to measure the range to the target, to evaluate the tracking accuracy and calculate the number of hits. In the middle of the 70’s the BT 33 Artillery and Mortar Fire Control Simulator was introduced. In a classroom, projectors were used to display the terrain image on a huge screen. A number of symbols could be superimposed on to the terrain image. The data of the artillery projectiles were fed into the central computer unit and the results were presented on the screen. The terrain was programmed into a magnetic core store that had to be loaded from a punched tape before each training session. The data were about 8 kb and took about 10 minutes to load! In the late 70s Saab Training Systems started developing a laser simulator system, called BT 41. This simulator could compute the actual ballistic path of a simulated projectile or missile and simultaneously search for targets in the vicinity of the simulated projectile as it flew down range.

  • In the 1980’s Saab Training Systems AB produces BT 41 for the German Leopard tank, a new simulation system for anti-tank weapons. They developed new moving targets for tanks and infantry. In the middle of the 80’s they develop new laser strap ons used for gunnery training for modern air defence weapons and target recognition, tracking skills and target engagement. Another laser simulator was developed for land to land training. The simulator was used for training on TOW (tube launched) missiles.

  • In the early 1990’s Saab Training Systems AB develops a new simulator which is lighter and more powerful than the older ones. The new kind of simulators was called BT 46. The difference between the BT 46 and the older BT 41 was 35 kilos with BT 46’s 5 kilos. It used much less power, around 5w, compared to the BT 41’s 100w. Due to the new simulators Saab Training Systems AB got many deals over the early 90’s. Also they developed a visual simulator, BT 61, which was a small system that could be used indoors, outdoors and could be installed on anti-air guns.

  • In the late 90’s Saab Training Systems AB introduce the GAMER system. The BT 46 laser systems enabled large training exercises and created a need for a system to keep exercise organisers informed about exercise developments and situations. Large exercises also led to a need for a system allowing after exercise reviews and analysis. Because of that need, Saab Training Systems developed its GAMER system. GAMER a array of computing and communications facilities, including GPS and radios mounted on all vehicles and soldiers as well as a central computer system to manage and present all the collected data. The first GAMER system was ordered by the US Army. They also developed a small Ams Transmitter, the BT 47 which is used in the the man worn infantry system BT 47 Lightweight Personnel Detection Device.

  • In the befinning of the 2000’s Saab Training Systems AB gets lots of deals and great contracts in The Netherlands, Finland[3], Norway, Italy, Germany[4] and more.

Four bigger business areas

Gunnery and Skills Training

The Gunnery and Skills Training business area is responsible for systems engineering, and the marketing and sale of training systems for infantry, antitank, vehicle, helicopter, support and training concepts for customers. It also provides aftermarket support for products and services, such as repairs and spare parts. This business area focuses on deals involving simulator-supported training up to platoon level and application deliveries.

Tactical Training

The Tactical Training business area is responsible for systems engineering and applications, programs and marketing and sales of tactical training products. This area is also concerned with the support, testing and installation of systems, in the main, total concepts for complete combat training facilities, stationary or mobile. The focus is on deals involving simulator-supported tactical training from a “turnkey perspective”, aimed at company level and upward.

Live Fire Training

The Live Fire Training business area is responsible for development, production, marketing and sales of target materiel for training with live ammunition as well as target materiel for laser firing. Responsible for designing the basic products and the overall concept as per the customer’s requirements and technical capabilities on all markets for both fixed installations and mobile solutions. Develops customer support deals at installed bases, employing its own resources or in partnership with an established company. The L business area focuses on all applications where the customer requires a realistic representation of a threat in the form of mobile and stationary targets. As the targets can be equipped with various hit transmitters for everything from lasers to live ammunition, all the different stages of training can be supported by the business area’s products. [6]

USA

The USA business area is responsible for focusing on deals in the USA and US Government worldwide as well as customer support, in conjunction with the other business areas. Subsidiary Saab Training LLC is responsible for development of the American market, technical application work for specific customers, and marketing/sales of the company’s product range. [7]
