User:Pelotas/Belgian clubs in European football

Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Belgian football clubs have entered European association football competitions (UEFA Champions League/European Cup, UEFA Cup/Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, UEFA Intertoto Cup and the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners Cup) since 1955, when Anderlecht took part in the inaugural European Cup.

The first Belgian side to reach the final of a European tournament was Anderlecht, losing out to Arsenal in 1969–70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final. The most successful years for Belgian clubs in European football however are the late 70s and early 80s, with no less than ten finals featuring a Belgian club between 1976 and 1984, winning half of those. Antwerp is currently the last Belgian team to have played a European final, losing the 1992–93 European Cup Winners' Cup to Parma.
