Childhood

Jones was born at the "Doctor's Hospital" in San Diego Ca. to Henderson B. Jones (1935 - 2017) and Mary Ann Jones (1936 - 2003). His father was a career Marine and a Drill Instructor stationed at MCRD San Diego, CA. Jones spent his school years mainly in California near Marine Bases except for his 2nd and 3rd grade years at Mathew C. Perry school in MCAS Iwakuni Japan where his father was the station adjutant. One day while riding with his father to MCAS Iwakuni, 8 year old Jones observed the Marine Guards at the entrance gate with a starched uniform and a sun burned neck and decided that he too wanted to be a Marine. Jones' father would retire in March of 1974, and the family moved to Battiest Oklahoma. Jones would graduate from Battiest High School in May 1978. During the summer of 1978, Jones worked as a volunteer with a low income housing affiliate as a carpenter and roofer until early August.

Military Service

Jones reported to MCRD San Diego California on 14 August 1978. Jones would excel at all stages of basic training, and was the highest scoring shooter in his platoon with a score of 238 of 250, authorizing the wear of the USMC Expert Rifle Badge. This accomplishment resulted in Jones being meritoriously promoted to the next highest grade upon graduation. Jones then reported to NAS Millington TN for hydraulic/pneumatic system training on the A-4 aircraft. Jones would graduated number one in his class and given the opportunity to choose between the east coast and west coast bases. Jones chose MCAS El Toro, CA. Serving with VMA-214 "Blacksheep" as a hydraulic/pneumatic mechanic on the A-4M, and VMFP-3 "Eyes of the Corps" RF-4B Phantoms until 1981. The entire squadron was the ordered to NAS Lemoore CA. for airframes training with Navy Fleet replacement squadronVFA-125 "Rough Raiders", Jones and the rest of VMFA-314 cadre would return to MCAS El Toro in 1982 under the command of Marine LtCol P.B. Fields.

1982 - 1985 comprised of countless deployments readying the squadron to be combat operational and highly trained. VMFA-314 and VMFA-323 "Snakes" would be the first Marine Corps Hornets to deploy on an aircraft carrier.

In 1985, VMFA-314 commanded by LtCol. R. Savio transferred to Carrier Air Wing 13 (CVW-13), and embarked on board USS Coral Sea for duty with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
