Brot Monroe is a fictional character from the original ABC Daytime soap opera, All My Children and Iraq War veteran. Martinez stayed with the series until its cancellation in 2011.

Casting and creation

"For me to portray this role as Brot on the show, I think it's easy, because I can just take myself back to a place when it was painful, when I did want to be with someone, but I felt that it was better for them to move on with their life and not be a part of mine because of my appearance."[1]

In September 2008, All My Children put out a casting call for a real life veteran to portray the role of Taylor Thompson (Beth Ehlers)'s presumed dead fiancé. On October 31, 2008, ABC in which then president, Brian Frons confirmed that J. R. Martinez had been cast in the role of Brot.[2] Martinez first appeared on November 7, 2008. The character of Brot's injuries are based on Martinez's own injuries from his time in Iraq.[3] Brot and Taylor served together in the U. S. Army where they fell in love. When Brot is injured, he chooses to let Taylor think he is dead, rather than making her feel obligated to take care of him. When the couple is finally reunited, Taylor is still grieving over the loss.[4] The storyline allowed for ABC to partner with USA Cares.[5] The storyline also coincided with the U. S. presidential election of 2008.[6]
