Jone Kvie (born in Stavanger, Norway 1971) is a Norwegian artis, he is a sculptor.

Background and education

Kvie studied sculpture at Oslo National Academy of the Arts and before that he was at Vestlandets Art Academy, Bergen (Norway)[1]. Currently he lives and works between Berlin and Naples. This city, and the previous period spent in Marseille, inspired some of his more recent works.

Work

Kvie's work is inspired by and contains references to a broad range of diverse subjects including the natural sciences and nature from stalactite caves to drifting ice blocks, whirlpools, mountain landscapes and meteors[2].

Kvie's works are present in many international public collections, including American University Museum in Washington DC, a museum and sculpture garden located within the university's Katzen Arts Center ; ARoS Art Museum, in Denmark; the Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo ; Gothenburg Museum of Art in Sweden, among others.

Exhibitions

For Documenta fifteen, Jone Kvie presented two sculptures: a large volcanic rock from the Druseltal quarry in Kassel, inside Kassel Hauptbahnhof and a planetary nebula in handblown glass. His works reflect both phenomena and forms in nature and the random aesthetics of everyday life[3].

Both seized the opportunity to work and experiment with glass in production for the first time in their oeuvre and pursued their own artistic endeavours with this material. Both artists produced works of their own, but also created two works as a collaborative experiment.[5]

Collaborations

In his career, Jone Kvie has a long friendship and professional relationship with the artist Jimmie Durham and Maria Thereza Alves. He participates in Durham project for Documenta fifteen: Jimmie Durham & A Stick in the Forest by the Side of the Road with Bev Koski, Elisa Strinna, Hamza Badran, Iain Chambers, Joen Vedel, Maria Thereza Alves, and Wilma Lukatsch. The purpose of the collective project is not to elaborate a single work, instead, members would share knowledge, empathy, and humor[6].

Jone Kvie is also part of the LABINAC[7] design collective founded by Durham and Maria Thereza Alves, with the aim purpose of designing and making things and supporting the craft works of indigenous peoples in Latin America[8]
