Rhizopogon amylopogon is a sub-genus of Rhizopogon containing seven species. (Dowie J, 2017)

Sub-genus amylopogon are a particular kind of ectomychorizal fungi known as monotropoid mycorrhiza (Smith and Read, 1997). These fungi are characterized by the presence of a mantle, Hartig net, unique fungal peg, and intracellular hyphal complexes (Massicotte H.B., 2004). They are also classified by a specific and obligate symbiosis with members of Monotropoideae through a process known as myco-heterotrophy (Dowie J, 2017, Bidartendo, 2002, Bruns, 2000). Monotropoideae species depend on amylopogon species for carbon which they acquire from members of Pinaceae.
