The first 19 issues of X-Men, written by Stan Lee, introduced the five Professor Xavier, the original five X-Men (Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, and Marvel Girl, and antagonists Magneto and his first Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the Sentinels and their creator Bolivar Trask, and Juggernaut. During Roy Thomas's run (#-#), the X-Men shifted to more generic superhero stories, met Banshee, originally as a villain but later as an ally, and were briefly joined by Mimic. In issue #x the comic took the dramatic step of supposedly killing off Professor X, and breaking up the X-Men. This was soon abandoned, and the team regrouped, in a story which saw the introduction of Lorna Dane, a mutant who is alleged to be the daughter of Magneto. Soon Havok, Cyclops's younger brother, would manifest as a mutant and join them. In the last few issues Sunfire is introduced, and Xavier is revealed to have faked his death.

The X-Men became a reprint title from #67 to #93. Giant-Size X-Men #1 was published in 1970, with a new international team consisting of Cyclops, Banshee, Sunfire and Wolverine, along with new characters Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Thunderbird. In #94 Claremont had the original X-Men (bar Cyclops) leave, along with Sunfire; Thunderbird was killed off in #95. Marvel Girl would soon return to the team, and then become Phoenix in issue #100. Moira MacTaggert, a human ally of the X-Men would make her debut in #??. This would be soon followed by the first Shi'ar story.

The title would remain with a relatively consistent team until the Dark Phoenix Saga, which killed off Phoenix, causing Scott Summers to leave the team in mourning for her. In his absence, Storm became leader (a position she would maintain despite being depowered in #18?). During this story, the Hellfire Club were introduced, who would become recurring antagonists for many years, and Kitty Pryde, who would join the X-Men as a student in #138.

The Days of Future Past storyline introduced Mystique (originally a Ms. Marvel villain) into Uncanny X-Men and set the stage for an increasingly darker tone as relations between humans and mutants worsened. Kitty Pryde would be joined as a student at the school by the New Mutants in 1982. The New Mutants would soon become an ongoing series in its own right, and frequently have minor crossovers with Uncanny. The team became aware of a group of mutants, called Morlocks, living underground in New York City, and Storm became their leader. Rogue joined the team in #172, having defected from Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Cyclops would eventually become aware that Corsair (a space pirate used in Shi'ar stories) was really his father; Corsair would introduce Cyclops to his grandparents, and he soon thereafter became engaged and married to their employee Madelyne Pryor. She would give birth to their son in #200.

Claremont also redeemed the character of Magneto during this time, revealing a family tragedy in #125 (and hinting that he was the father of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch), and then that he was a survivor of the Holocaust in #150. This redemptive arc would culminate with his trial in #200 and his subsequent becoming headmaster of the school (Xavier having gone back to space). Claremont also revisited the world of Days of Future Past by bringing Rachel Summers bodily into the present day; she would join the X-Men.

1986 had seen the launch of X-Factor, a new series featuring the original five X-Men, which revealed that the Jean Grey who had died in #137 had been a copy made by the Phoenix Force rather than the real Jean Grey. It also had Cyclops abandon his wife and child, a decision that Claremont strongly disagreed with. Soon after the initial writer on X-Factor was replaced by Louise Simonson, the titles started acknowledging each other, and the first "X-over", the "Mutant Massacre", took place towards the end of 1986.
