Encoding

Encoding is the act of turning thoughts into a form of communication. The communication needs to be understood by both parties. The sender and receiver must be able to decode the type of communication or it will fail. If the sender uses a foreign language and the receiver does not understand then that will not work. an example of failed encoding may be with emojis. The sender may have a different meaning than what the receiver will take it as. [1]

Medium

A medium is a form of communication that is used between a sender and a receiver of this communication. Typically verbals medium is a form when one person is speaking to one person or a group of people. Other mediums include phone calls, emails, and text messages. Different mediums are used for different situations and choosing which medium will be the most successful. If the sender is sharing lots of information an email may be better so that the receiver can go back and access this information. [2]

Examples

  • Interviews (Information between two people about a certain subject)[3]
  • Diaries (Information that someone has written and logged)
  • Plays (Stories performed for an audience)
  • Novels (Books written with information and stories)[4]
  • Letters (Information sent from one party to another)
  • Photographs (Photos that are taken in history which carry information)
  • Audio and Video Recordings (Information that is communicated over audio or video)[5]

Importance

Communication source is a general term and has many different ways to be used. When one person or party is sharing information with another person or party there must be a medium used to understand this information. This is used depending on the situation and who the information is going to be. A live video on TV would be information for a large audience. While a text message might just be for one person.
