The Province of Sumatra was a province of Indonesia that encompassed the entire island of Sumatra. It was established on 19 August 1945 by the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence as one of eight Indonesian provinces and was headed by governor Teuku Mohammad Hasan, in 1946 it became the de facto administrative region of Indonesia as per the Linggadjati agreement, and became an autonomous province in 1947. The province ceased to exist on 15 April 1948 when it was dissolved into three provinces.
