The dissolution of the Dutch East Indies was the disintegration of the Dutch colonial empire in Southeast Asia, as a direct consequence of the end of World War II and the subsequent movements of decolonisation in Asia. Since the early 20th century, nationalist movements had arose across the population within the colony, calling for a statehood and self-governance. The event of World War II in Asia and Pacific had driven the Dutch out of their control over the Dutch East Indies, in 1942 the colony had fallen to the Japanese occupation while the colonial government had to be exiled to Australia. Although there were attempts of retaking the colony, the turmoil and the declaration of independence of Indonesia has made the Dutch imperial government find it hard to regain control over the colony, so they had to reconcile with the Indonesian government and create a federation of Dutch dominions in an attempt to reassert control over the region. In 1946, a process of negotiation to create a federation between Indonesia and the Dutch imperial territory took place in Linggadjati.
