Firm history

mcCallumSather, formerly known as mcCallum Sather Architects Inc., was founded by Joanne McCallum and Greg Sather in 1996 with a focus on sustainable design[1].

The firm’s portfolio spans throughout Ontario, Canada with a growing presence in Canada and abroad including a mix of heritage, new construction, small community initiatives, multi-million-dollar, and innovative projects such as The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation alongside B+H, which was part of CaCBC’s pilot project, the Zero Carbon Building Initiative and WGBC’s Advancing Net Zero Initiative.[2]

A mid-sized architectural firm headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, with a second office in Kincardine, Ontario and a third office internationally located in Buffalo, New York, US[3]. They joined the Green Economy Canada Sustainable leadership program in 2017 with Sustainable Hamilton and Burlington group[4] Their Hamilton's office is located within one of Hamilton’s historic landmarks, the Canadian Westinghouse Company Headquarters, also known as the Westinghouse HQ, originally built in 1917.[5] In 2018, mcCallumSather completed the restoring project of the building and designed their workspace within to reflect he way they work through an integrated design approach.[6] Their design approach includes core principles of sustainability and design through an integrated design process.[7] As an integrated team of sustainable design professionals, the firm offers in-house architects, mechanical engineering since 2011, interior design services, LEED Facilitation Services since 2003, heritage Conservation, and Energy modelling since 2019.[7] The firm’s website states a commitment to sustainable design solutions stating: “[Their] purpose is clear - the design of a more resilient world through the advancement of sustainable design intelligence.[1]

Selected Projects

McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind[25]

The McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind located in Hamilton, Ontario, was completed in 2013.[25] It is a research facility designed for the study of how music and movement impact our health.[26]. The facility includes a theatre which adds sensory receptors to measure the brain’s reaction to the sounds and music being played.[26] Notable Awards included: 2014 HBSA Architectural Awards of Excellence - Renovation Institutional[27]


Hamilton City Hall Renovation[28]

The Hamilton City Hall, located in Hamilton, Ontario, McCallumSather in collaboration with Garwood-Jones, Hanham Architects and +VG Architects renovated the City of Hamilton existing 1960s Heritage-designated City Hall Building in 2010 with an Integrated team Approach.[28] McCallumSather led the interiors portion, consisting of 100,00-300,000 SF, of the renovation project.[29][30] Notable Awards included: 2011 Award of Merit in Heritage Restoration, City of Hamilton Urban Design & Architecture Awards, 2011 TOBY Award – Office Building of the year, BOMA Toronto Awards[28]

Westinghouse HQ - Hamilton Heritage Landmark[5]

A 1917 historical Landmark in Hamilton Ontario, Westinghouse HQ restoration project for the client Electric City Developments was completed in 2019.[5] Combining sustainability and heritage design, the Canadian Westinghouse Company Headquarters, Westinghouse HQ, originally built in 1917 at 80 000 SF. Was restored as a seven-story office building. Designed to be fully Barrier-free with an integrated of Bike storage and facilities which support and encourage commuting.[31] The building was certified as LEED Platinum. Received Awards included: 2020 Cornerstone Heritage Award – Transformative Projects[32], 2020 Mechanical Engineering Project of the year, 2019 ARIDO Award of Merit – Workspace, 2019 CaGBC Ontario Green Building Awards – Tenant Improvement

McCallumSather Workspace[6]

Spread across 10,000 SF of space in Westinghouse HQ located in Hamilton, Ontario, mcCallumSather designed its own workplace in 2019 to reflect their integrated design approach of working while combining sustainability and heritage design.[6] Notable Awards included: 2019 ARIDO Award of Merit – workspace, 2019 CaGBC Ontario Green Building Awards – Tenant Improvements.

Mohawk College - The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation[33]

The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation at Mohawk College’s Fennel Campus in Hamilton Ontario is an expansion of Mohawk College’s technology department completed in 2018 in collaboration between mcCallumSather and B+H Architects.[33] The building serves as a living lab for the students where the entire building is accessible to them from the solar thermal array on the roof patio to the mechanical penthouse and the sub-basement water room.[30] The building is part of the CaCBC’s pilot project, the Zero Carbon Building Initiative and WGBC’s Advancing Net Zero Initiative and is certified as a 'Zero Carbon Building' [34] . Notable Awards included: 2019 RAIC Award of Excellence – Innovation in Architecture[35], 2018 Rethinking Future Awards – Architecture, Construction Design Awards – Third ward in Institutional[36], 2018 HBSA Award, 2017 Ontario Society of Professional Engineering Project of the year, 2017 CaGBC Innovation in Sustainability Award.


EMS Headquarters, LEED Gold certified in Canada[37]

Completed over 2 phases. The region of Waterloo’s Emergency Medical Services Headquarters was CaGBC’s First LEED Gold Certified building in Canada. Located in Waterloo, Ontario, completed in 2004[37] Design incorporates both administrative and staff spaces, with a full garage and maintenance facility.[38]

Woodward Environmental Lab[39]


The Woodward Environmental Lab, located in Hamilton, Ontario was completed in 2007. First LEED Certified Project for City of Hamilton. Laboratory located at City of Hamilton’s Central sewage treatment plant, is an Operations Control Centre that tests and monitors the city’s municipal water and wastewater.[39] Notable Awards included: 2007 Green Building Design Award, outside the Box award and 2007 Award of Merit, City of Hamilton Urban Design and Architecture Awards[39]
