The Esker Foundation is a privately-funded, non-commercial contemporary art gallery, located in Calgary's Inglewood neighbourhood. It hosts three exhibitions per year and offers free admission.

History

The Esker Foundation was founded by Calgary philanthropists Jim and Susan Hill, with the aim of providing a venue for contemporary art exhibitions and lectures.[1] Jim Hill, a businessman and developer, is the owner of Inglewood's Atlantic Avenue Art Block, a four-storey building designed by Abugov Kaspar Architects. The building was designed to house the gallery on its fourth floor.[2] The gallery, designed by Kasian Architects and Interior Designers, has an area of 15,000 square feet.[1][3]

The Esker Foundation is entirely privately funded and non-commercial; it offers free admission to its exhibitions.[1] The gallery generates revenue from commercial tenants located in the building.[3]

Exhibitions

The gallery features curated exhibitions, which run for three to four months. Its first show was curated by Caterina Pizanias and featured the works of 44 Alberta-educated artists.[3]
