20th Century Boys (20世紀少年, Nijūsseiki Shōnen) is a science fiction-mystery manga Written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa. Manga is serialized in Shogakukan's Seinen manga magazine Big Comic Spirits from 1999 until 2006. Shogakukan published 22 tankobon volumes under Big Comic imprint covering 249 chapters. The first manga volume published on January 29, 2000[1] and twenty-second on November 30, 2006.[2] Shogakukan Also published special version with CD of volume eleven on December 25, 2002[3] and nineteen on June 30, 2005.[4] The story of the apocalyptic manga series revolves around main protagonist Kenji Endō and his friends, and there journey to save the world from "Friend". Manga series won the 2001 Kodansha Manga Award in the General category,[5] an Excellence Prize at the 2002 Japan Media Arts Festival, and the 2003 Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category.[6] The series makes many references to rock music as well as a number of 1960s-1970s anime; its title is based on T.Rex's famous song, "20th Century Boy".
In United States and Canada manga is licensed by VIZ Media in 2005; however, at Urasawa's request, it has been rescheduled for release after Urasawa's another manga Monster finishes its English serialization due to a change in art style over time.[7] The first VIZ manga volume published on February 17, 2009[8] and as of August 9, 2011[9] sixteen volumes has been published. The Manga also Published in Germany by Panini Comics[10] , in France by Panini Comics , in Hong Kong by Jade Dynasty , in Netherlands by Glénat[11] , in Indonesia by Level Comic , in Italy by Planet Manga , in South Korea by Haksan Publishing[12] , in Spain by Planeta DeAgostini and in Taiwan by Tong Li Comics.[13]
The conclusion of manga was written under the name 21st Century Boys (21世紀少年, Nijūisseiki Shōnen) and serialized in Big Comic Spirits from January 2007 till July 2007. The 16 individual chapters was collected in two tankobon manga volumes. The first volume was published on May 30,2007[14] and second on September 28, 2007.[15]
