Ciarán H. Whelan Ward, Wizzy to some, Isaac to others, and ‘Luke Arthur’ on his facebook page. Born some place, at some time (10/04/2000), he accomplished much while he was with us and fabricated accomplishing even more. Ciarán was in his final year studying History and Sociology at University College Dublin when he passed away on the 17th of January 2022.

Ciarán would never shy away from a conversation, no matter the topic he was deeply invested, and the next time you met him he always had more to contribute.^[1][2][3] He was able to make people laugh and would always commit himself tirelessly to the bit.^[4]

Nerd though he was, he was not averse to exercise, and made regular use of the UCD swimming pool along with his friends. He took part in a vast array of sports; ranging from running, to archery and his crippling addiction to mobile games.^[5][6]

The sport he excelled at most was taking extraordinarily long walks deep into night, listening to whatever eclectic and eccentric album he had freshly downloaded. Music and the history of music were his passion. Ciarán was an encyclopedia of knowledge and trivia; no matter how obscure or controversial the artist, he knew all there was to know.^[7] Rest assured the Gardaí now possess his laptop on which he stored terabytes of pirated music. His departure has unfortunately resulted in a cataclysmic decline in traffic to the Youtube-to-mp3 website.^{[citation needed]}

If you were lucky enough to have him over at your house, he would always treat you like the guest; all the while laughing in the background, managing the party and he would insist on cleaning after everyone else had left.^[8][9] Once it was over he would make a little too much eye contact and give you the most heartfelt thanks and fervently let you know how much he enjoyed the night.

These words once sung by Billy Mackenzie stuck with Ciarán. Listening to them now points to the deeper personal meaning, that Ciarán will now be young forever.^[10] We wish we could say that his passing was part of some eldritch ritual; offering blood to the Blood God, but wasn’t. He was taken from us long before his time. He had plans for the future.^[11][12] There were places to revisit, friends to talk to and time to spend alone.

When we think on those he left behind, it is important to remember how deeply he burrowed into peoples’ hearts and pushed them to be the best version of themselves.

Rest in Peace, Ciarán.
