Biography

Arthur Timotheo da Costa was born on November 12, 1882.[1] He began his studies at the Casa da Moeda do Brasil, where he studied Design and became familiar with the technique of Engraving.[1][2] In 1894, encouraged by the Institute's Director, Enes de Souza, he enrolled at the Escola de Belas Artes alongside his younger brother, Joao Timoteo da Costa, himself a painter. He studied under Daniel Berard, Zeferino da Costa. Rodolfo Amoedo and Henrique Bernardelli.[1][2] Between 1895 and 1900, he studied scenography informally under Oreste Coliva, and worked as his assistant.[1][2]

Black and from humble beginnings, Arthur faced considerable adversity in his life.[2] Nevertheless, he participated in multiple editions of the "Expositions générales des Beaux-Arts", an annual art exhibition hosted by the Escola de Belas Artes. In 1907, the opportunity arose for him to travel abroad, thanks to the popularity of his painting titled "Antes do Aleluia."[2] The following year, he travelled to Paris where he stayed for 2 years to study. In 1911, he travelled with a contingent of artists (including his brother Joao) to decorate the Brazilian Pavilion at the 1911 World Exposition in Turin.[1][2]

From 1910 onwards, Arthur was a very prolific artist, establishing himself as a renowned painter.[2] In Rio de Janeiro in 1919, together with a group of fellow artists, he founded the group " la Juventas", later renamed the "Brazilian Society of fine arts". That same year, he and his brother decorated/designed the main hall of Fluminese Football Club. In 1921, he participated in the Expositions générales des Beaux-Arts for the last time.[1][2]

Da Costa died on October 5, 1922, after being interned at a mental hospital. He was 41.[1]
