M. Shahinoor Rahman (born 01 July 1966), known as Shahinoor Rahman, is a Bengali-English Writer, columnist, academic, folklorist, media personality, singer and a researcher in Bangladesh. He is the current Pro-vice-chancellor of Islamic University, Bangladesh in Kushtia.[1]

Early life and education

Born on 01 July 1966 in Kushtia, Dr M Shahinoor Rahman was raised both in Dhaka and Khulna, Bangladesh. He started taking elementary and primary education from Dhaka and then secondary education from Khulna. He completed his higher secondary certificate examination from Khulna Government City College. Graduated in English with Honours (1986) and 1st class 1st position in MA (1987) from the University of Rajshahi. He completed another MA in Folklore with thesis (1999) equivalent to an M Phil Degree at the Indiana University, Bloomington, USA under the supervision of Professor Dr. [[Henry Glassie[[, a renowned folklorist recognized as a celebrity among the academics around the world. Then he was done with his PhD Degree in English literature (2002).

Career

Professor Dr. M. Shahinoor Rahman is currently serving as Pro-Vice Chancellor of Islamic University, Bangladesh for second consecutive term after successfully completing the first tenure as Pro-Vice Chancellor of the same university. Has been the senior most Professor with selection grade in the Department of English, Islamic University, Bangladesh. He has been working as member of Recruitment Boards for teachers at all levels from Lecturer to Professor at different public and private universities.

He started career as a lecturer in the English Discipline at Khulna University at the age of 24. He served as Associate Instructor at the Indiana University, Bloomington, USA. He had been the Chairman of the Department of English and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Islamic University, Bangladesh. He served as the senior most Professor in the Department of English at Jagannath University, Dhaka and in the Department of English at Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka, chairing and attending different meetings related to research and academic matters. He worked as Syndicate Member at Islamic University, Bangladesh and Jagannath University, Dhaka and at other universities.

Has been involved in active teaching and research for over 29 years. Involved with different research oriented and knowledge generating bodies, conducting research activities and giving training sessions to teachers at the National University and different private and public universities as well as at other institutes.

Writings and Contributions

He has a considerable number of research articles and books to his credit, of which Dhutura Phool (Dhaka, 1991), English Literature: Perspective and Criticism (Dhaka, 1996), Bengali Poet Fakir Lalon Shah: Oral Poet and Tradition in the Social Context of Contemporary Bangladesh (Indiana University, USA,1997), A Collection of Literary Essays (Dhaka, 2003) and Practicum in Social Work and Social Development: Practice Learning Process (Dhaka, 2019) deserve a special mention.

Personal Life

  • Professor Rahman is the elder son of late Diloara Rahman Jostna and Md. Abdur Rahman. His father is a freedom fighter (certificate no. Ma 164094). He is married to Dr. Mossammad Salma Sultana, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of English at Islamic University, Bangladesh. He has two children – one daughter and one son. His daughter Sumaita Sadia Rahman (American by birth) is currently studying at the University of North Carolina, USA in Computer Science at the undergraduate level and his son Shuhreed Manik Rahman is studying in the Islamic University Laboratory School and College at Islamic University campus, Bangladesh. He has three sisters graduated in different disciplines and one of them Dr. Fatimatuz Johura Rahman did her PhD from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has two graduate brothers
