Bruce Richard Jennings (March 29, 1926 – January 28, 1997) was an American racing driver.
Early years
Bruce Jennings grew up in Homeland, a neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. After completing high school, he served in the United States Army Air Corps during the final months of World War II. After the end of the war he worked for the insurance agency that his father had established in 1922.
Racing career
Jennings' driving career started in May 1957, and ended in March 1981 following his last start at the 12 Hours of Sebring. In between there were 259 sports car races, of which he was able to finish 208. Jennings' 33 race and 39 class victories made him one of the most successful American racing drivers of his generation. His successes in Porsche 356 Carrera Speedsters, of which he owned four, earned him the nickname "King Carrera". His red and white painted Porsche models with the starting number 77 were well known.
In 1961 and 1964 Jennings won the production car class of the SCCA Sportscar Championship. He contested the 12 Hours of Sebring 18 times, where his best finish was third overall in his debut in 1962. His only start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1967 ended due to a defective battery in his factory Chaparral 2F. His worst accident occurred in 1960 at Watkins Glen, where his Porsche 356 rolled several times. Despite a few broken vertebrae, he was back in a racing car just a few weeks later.
