Ship Simulator Professional V2.0

Ship Simulator Professional V2.0 is a new professional ship simulation platform. It is created by Dutch-based simulator software developer VSTEP. It will be released on March 17th 2009. Ship Simulator Professional provides users with a professional maritime training and simulation platform. It features 30 different advanced detailed vessels in highly detailed suroundings.

Ship Simulator Professional supports Windows XP and Vista and can be used with up to three external monitors. It also supports the use of external chart devices, AIS monitors and other navigation systeems and hardware. You can configure up to 8 serial connections separately for different NMEA sentences, this includes update frequencies, baud rates etc. It is also possible to use Ethernet instead of serial communications (23 NMEA ouput, 9 input). Ship Simulator Professional V2.0 uses a modular add-on system and can be enhanced with multiple specialised training modules.

Feature List

  • 30 Highly detailed vessels with realistic dynamics and maneuvering properties.
  • 9 Realistic and accurate sailing environments.
  • Dynamic and customisable wave, day/night & weather system.
  • NMEA input and output communication: 23 NMEA 0183 output sentences and 9 input sentences, configurable across 8 serial ports or Ethernet.
  • Conning screen and simplified electronic vector charts included.
  • Interface with motion platforms.
  • Usable for conventional engine & steering inputs, DP systems and azimuth controls.
  • Realistic vessel collisions and grounding on shallow water.
  • Towing and mooring possible with realistic vessel responses.

Trainee Modules

Besides the standard version of Ship Simulator Professional there are additonal specialised training modules, which are built on top of the standard product. These modules can be purchased separately.

Navigation Panel Add-on

This module allows for external display of the Ship Sim Professional navigational instruments on up to three additional screens. Ship Simulator Professional includes the following fully functional navigational instruments, optionally displayed as small overlay windows on the main 3D outside view:

  • Radar
  • Conning
  • Chart
  • Compass

The Navigation Panel Add-on makes it possible to display these navigation panels full-screen on one to three external displays. You can dynamically switch between the panels, and zoom in and out on the radar and chart panels. The Navigation Panel Add-on receives the required data from Ship Simulator Professional via the NMEA interface, across either a serial interface or Ethernet.

  • Dependencies: None
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Berthing Trainer

The Berthing Trainer module adds an extra viewpoint on the bridge wing, synchronised seamlessly with the main bridge viewpoint. It allows the simulator to be used for professional berthing training.

  • Dependencies: None
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Radar / ARPA Trainer

The Radar / ARPA Trainer will simulate a realistic radar and ARPA screen, for advanced radar training.

  • Dependencies: SSPro
  • Planned release date: Sept 2009

Communications Trainer

The Communications Trainer will simulate various communications instruments, like an intercom, a VHF, a satellite phone, a short-wave radio, and a walky-talky. It only functions in combination with the Communications Server, and it can only be used usefully in a training session with multiple trainees or an instructor playing an active role.

  • Dependencies: Communications Server
  • Planned release date: July 2009

Fire on board trainer

The Fire on board trainer is designed to train officers to use the proper procedures in case of an on-board emergency.

  • Dependencies: None
  • Planned release date: March 2010

Instructor Modules

Mission Creator

Add a full Mission Editor to Ship Simulator Professional to create your own custom missions, optimized for your training or demonstration objectives. The missions you make with the Mission Creator can be uploaded to the Global Mission Repository, or in case you have the Ship Simulator Server, to the local Mission Repository.

  • Dependencies: SSPro
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Ship Dynamics Editor

With the Advanced Ship Dynamics Editor, you can adapt the characteristics of the simulator vessels, to suit your specific training needs. You can change vessel properties including: Displacement Engine type, thrust and allocation Rudder placement, dimensions and steering forces Dynamic vessel response to waves Manoeuvring characteristics. All Manoeuvring data can be saved in an EXCEL table for further detailed analysis. This allows you to compare the simulated sea trials with the real sea trial report. Further refinement of the hydrodynamic properties allows you to get an accurate match of the simulated and the real ship manoeuvring characteristics.

  • Dependencies: SSPro
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Advanced Wave & Weather Editor

This module adds an advanced version of the basic Ship Simulator Professional weather editor, allowing for further adjustment and creation of realistic weather and dynamic wave effects.

  • Dependencies: SSPro
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Bridge & Lights Editor

The Bridge & Lights Editor allows you to customize all vessel configurations: Place bridge navigation instruments Add navigation lights Place mooring/towing connection points

  • Dependencies: SSPro
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Chart Editor

With the Chart Editor, you can place buoy objects on charts. You can set the buoy model, color, and light signalling characteristics.

  • Dependencies: SSPro
  • Planned release date: March 2009

Instructor Station

With the Instructor Station, the instructor can create training sessions with one or multiple trainees and during the training he can influence several elements: Weather and waves. The instructor can make the weather go bad, to see if the trainee responds to this properly. Rudder and engine damage. He can make a rudder suddenly get stuck of one of the trainee vessels, or make one of the engines perform below the optimum, or let it get fully defect. The trajectory of autonomous (target) vessels. For instance, he can create difficult situations for the trainee by adding vessels on a collision course with the trainee vessel. The instructor can also record a session for playback afterwards (post action review). All vessel movements get recorded, and during the replay the instructor can take different camera positions, including bird’s eye view.

  • Dependencies: None
