Hashtag United is a YouTube-Based football club that was founded in 2016. They gained notability due to recording their matches, making videos around them and posting them to one of the players, Spencer Owen's YouTube channel, known as Spencer F.C., which has over 2 Million subscribers. They have played teams such as Vauxhall Motors F.C., as well as many Premier League staff teams. As of current, their Twitter and Instagram accounts have over 100,000 followers each. They have been branded by BBC journalist Alex Bysouth as 'The Future of Football Clubs' [1]
History
Hashtag United was officially launched on Owen's YouTube channel through a video entitled ""Introducing Hashtag United" which was released on March 19, 2016. In this video he revealed the official kit of the club, as well as the first ever squad. They released the video of their first official match on the 27th March 2016, against a team organized by The Sun, named Dream Team F.C., named after a sport section of their site. Their team included former Gambia and Millwall Striker Cherno Samba, who scored one goal. The match finished 2-2, with goals coming from Faisal Manji and Ryan Adams.
The team recorded their first ever win in a 2-1 victory over football blogging site Copa90, with goals coming from Dan Brown and Ryan Adams.
Structure
Hashtag United do not play in a conventional league, instead they play in exhibition matches against other teams. They commonly play under a system similar to that of the FIFA video game series, where they play a set number of games and try to reach a point target for those games. If they do this then the team is promoted a 'division' and for the next set of games they play harder teams. The system is controlled by the club, and most of their opponents apply to play against the side.
Stadium
Hashtag United play their games behind closed doors, although they sometimes do allow away supporters. Player/Manager Spencer Owen revealed in an interview with The Daily Telegraph that they have to keep match timings secret because "Otherwise there’s a chance a lot of supporters might turn up to watch and the truth is we’re not prepared security wise for that yet"[2] The club rent out a stadium with a large stand to help get better camera shots for their YouTube videos.
Sponsors
Hashtag United were formerly sponsored by EE Limited, a British mobile network operator. They are now sponsored by Top Eleven Football Manager, a mobile football game available on iOS. English sportswear supplier Umbro are the official kit provider to Hashtag United.
Supposed Signing of Adebayo Akinfenwa
Ahead of the main 2015/16 season, it leaked that Hashtag United were close to signing football cult hero Adebayo Akinfenwa, who has a large following on YouTube of almost 300,000. In the off-season after his release from AFC Wimbledon, he uploaded almost every other day onto his YouTube channel. Many speculated that Akinfenwa was planning to retire from professional football to concentrate on his online persona. However, the deal fell through as he was offered a contract with Football League Two side Wycombe Wanderers F.C.. Both the club and Akinfenwa confirm the deal was very close to completion prior to this. In mid 2016, Akinfenwa joked on his Instagram account that he had joined the club.[3]
