The Association of Independents in Radio (AIR) is a non-profit organization that serves as a network for independent producers in public and commercial media.

History

From 1980 to 1986, National Public Radio maintained the Satellite Programming Development Fund, ostensibly to support the shift to satellite distribution, then a new technology. [1] SPDF provided funding for independent producers. When it was discontinued in 1986[2], it was folded into the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Radio Program Fund, then headed by Richard Madden. Although the Radio Program Fund provided support for new programming, "independent producers had to compete with stations, NPR, and other producing entities."[3] In response to this shift, AIR was officially incorporated on November 15, 1988.

AIR's founding members were:

  • Lauren Krenzel
  • Jay Allison
  • Stephen Erickson, President
  • Deborah Begel
  • Karen Michel
  • Marjorie Van Halteren
  • Susan Poulsen-Krogh
  • Sandy Tolan
  • Steve Rathe
  • Karen Frillman
