Alien Species in Old Man's War

The Consu

The Consu, an alien race from the book Old Man's War, is an extremely intelligent and zealot race, but they are also very religious. [1] [2] Before a battle would take place, they would set up what seems to be an indestructible force field so that there would be no interruptions during their ceremony. They usually fight for sport and were not usually interested in colonizing any planets either. [3] They believe that in death, they can be reborn or redeemed. Before the battle, a Consu would usually announce if a war is to take place and is usually a lower class Consu. They believed that they are pure and coming into contact with any other species would contaminate themselves. They would even go as far as creating a dome for unwelcomed visitors, sending a criminal to consult with the unwelcomed visitors, and when the confrontation was over, they would blast the dome to the nearest black hole. [3] They did this so none of the atoms that have been in contact with the unwelcomed visitors would reach the Consu home planet. It was common for the Consu to send six of their kind to speak with the visitors; one Consu would have the title “ambassador,” while the other five were criminals or disgraced soldiers in previous battles. The visitors would have the right to receive answers to any of their questions, but the catch is, they can only ask a certain amount of questions, depending on how many Consu were defeated. [2] [3] The fate of the Consu that consulted with the visitors was also to be sealed, meaning they die afterwards, never again returning to home. During battle, they would match their technology according to the species they’re at war with. Their battle technology and weaponry were also on par with their enemies and very rarely use technology that is far more advanced than their enemies, even though they can easily do so. [1] The Consu is an alien race that could not be defeated so easily. Their home planet is also covered by an impenetrable shield that is powered by the Consu sun. The Consu sun is covered in a type of technology that appears to absorb all the energy emitting from the white dwarf planet. This is just one of the technologies that the Consu uses that separates themselves from other alien species. This is a constant reminder to all the other species in the multi-verse that the Consu are far superior in technology and weaponry. [3]

Whaidian

The Whaidian is an alien species that appear to “look rather like a cross between a black bear and a large, angry flying squirrel” (Old Man’s War pg.196). They’re an alien species that are weaker than the CDF (Colonial Defense Force) but are still a threat to them. Their home consisted of a few small planets linked together. The Whaidian and the CDF fought against each other for the Earnhardt system because some of the planets there were able to harbor life for both species. Once the Whaidian home space was invaded by the CDF, the protagonist of the story, John Perry, and his comrades witness the Whaidian chanting. It is unknown what or why the Whaidian species chanted. [3]

Rraey

They're an alien species that have birdlike legs [4] , over the years, developed a craving for humans. They enjoy the taste of humans so much, they made different types of dishes for different parts of the human body. After the Coral Massacre in the series Old Man’s War, the CDF intercepted a message where the Rraey’s broadcasted programs where they showed Rraey chiefs preparing a meal made from humans. The Rraey’s are a few decades to a century behind the CDF in terms of technology and weaponry, but they’re still a threat to the CDF. At one point, they were untouchable because the Consu gave them a new type of machine that points out to the Rraeys exactly where the CDF space crafts would come and when. The new machine had the ability to detect the path of CDF space craft skip drives, so the Rraey would have time to prepare to attack once the CDF arrived on the Coral planet. [5] This gave the Rraey the upper-hand, until the Ghost Brigades infiltrated the planet and cornered the Rraeys into destroying their only machine given to them by the Consu. [3]

Condensed Form of Synthesis

The Consu

The Consu are a type of alien species that are very zealous, religious, as well as intelligent. [1] [2] The Consu, being perhaps the most intellectual being in the universe, is a species that should not be reckoned with. Unlike other alien species, the Consu is able to harness the power of a dwarf planet, create impenetrable shields, and a taychon detector, which was the reason for the Rraeys being nearly invincible against the CDF. They are the only alien species able to do so, making them far superior in weaponry and technology than any other alien species. [3]

The Rraey

The Rraeys are an alien species that resembles more of a bird than a human. [4] They have eyes and ears all around their head, possibly having a 360 degrees vision. They developed a craving for humans, going as far as creating many dishes for different parts of the body. They are, however, a few decades behind the CDF in terms of technology and weaponry, but nonetheless, still considered a threat to the CDF.

The Whaidians

The Whaidians are an alien species that have an appearance similar to that of a "cross between black bear and a large flying squirrel." Their home consists of small planets that are linked together. [3]
