Non-SPS Sources to Improve the Page

  1. Remove "Our principles". Cochrane Community. Cochrane.org. 2017. Retrieved 19 October 2017. (presently ref 4), as this first sentence already has a citation: the Journal of Clinical Epid article(presently ref 5)
  2. The next paragraph in the lead is:"It counts with 52 review groups that are based at research institutions worldwide, each focused on a specific topic of health research. These groups support Cochrane’s primary organizational function of preparing and maintaining systematic reviews. They are all independently run and financed. Cochrane has more than 37,000 volunteers in more than 130 countries.[3]" I propose that ref # 3 ( "About us | Cochrane". www.cochrane.org. Retrieved 14 September 2015) be removed from this paragraph and a nytimes newspaper article be used instead. Based on this new citation, this paragraph could read:"Cochrane includes 53 review groups that are based at research institutions worldwide. Cochrane has approximately 30,000 volunteer experts from around the world.[1]"
  3. "The group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions and diagnostic tests and publishes them in The Cochrane Library.[6][7]". I suggest that both ref 6 and 7 ( Scholten RJ, Clarke M, Hetherington J (August 2005). "The Cochrane Collaboration". Eur J Clin Nutr. 59 (Suppl 1): S147–9; discussion S195–6. doi:10.1038/sj.ejcn.1602188. PMID 16052183. (7):Ben Goldacre (2012), Bad Pharma, Fourth Estate, p. 14ff.) Be removed from the article. The above nytimes article can be used as a reference for this citation, as it discusses that Cochrane produces systematic reviews. In addition, a BBC article on treating children with worms has some background info about cochrane, specifically (quoted from source) "Known as a Cochrane Review this type of study brings together all the high-quality trials the team can find - published or unpublished.[2]" Proposed change: "Cochrane conducts systematic reviews of health-care interventions and diagnostic tests and publishes them in The Cochrane Library.[1][2]"double check # 2
  4. #History Section, first sentence presently says: "Cochrane, previously known as the Cochrane Collaboration, was founded in 1993 under the leadership of Iain Chalmers. It was developed in response to Archie Cochrane's call for up-to-date, systematic reviews of all relevant randomized controlled trials of health care." Remove the reference to Archie Cochrane's 1972 book, and insert nytimes article as a secondary non-SPS source that describes the naming of Cochrane based on Archie and this book.[3] Leave ref 10[4] and 12[5] as these are review articles in high level journals that have undergone peer review and appear to be WP:MEDRS acceptable.
  5. Remove ref 12, and replace with with Alan Cassels: The Cochrane Collaboration: Medicine's Best-Kept Secret (Agio Publishing House, 2015). This does appear to be a non-SPS source. Please let me know if you have other information about this book that I do not have access to. From googling I do not see any ties between the author and Cochrane. Change this paragraph to: "The Cochrane center was established in the UK, to facilitate systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials across all areas of health care.[6]" Presently says, "Funds were provided to establish a "Cochrane Centre", to collaborate with others, in the UK and elsewhere, to facilitate systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials across all areas of health care."
  6. Remove the following paragraphs in the history section and the two references:"In 2000, the organization began awarding a prize named in honor of Kenneth S. Warren to a person "who is a national living in a developing country of a published Cochrane review which is judged to be both of high methodological quality and relevant to health problems in developing countries"; the winner gets a $1000 and their expenses paid to an annual Cochrane conference where they receive the award.[7] In 2013 the organization published an editorial describing its efforts to train people in the developing world how to do Cochrane reviews.[8] "

Potential additionS

  1. NIH doc which summarizes the purpose of Cochrane Reviews as "to inform healthcare decision making".[9]
  2. Quote from source:"Meta-research on clinical trials has been further advanced by the Cochrane Collaboration, which systematically collects studies across disease types to weigh up the evidence. Cochrane has developed 'risk of bias' assessments to help its reviewers to evaluate possible weaknesses in trial reports.[10]"
