Criticism

The SPLC has come under fire in recent years for designating several social conservative advocacy organizations as hate groups for their positions on homosexuality, sparking outcries from conservatives In 2010, the American Family Association and the Family Research Council were designated as hate groups; the reasons given by the SPLC were the "propagation of known falsehoods and demonizing propaganda" from the AFA and FRC's belief that homosexuality poses a danger to children.[1][2] FRC President Tony Perkins asked the SPLC to retract its designation but they refused.[3] In reaction, the AFA and FRC joined with several other social conservative organizations for an online petition called "Start Debating/Stop Hating"[4]
