Welcome to my page! My name is Julien McArdle, and I'm a researcher at the Laboratory for Applied Geomatics and GIS Science[1] at the University of Ottawa. GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems, a fascinating field which represents the natural evolution of cartography into the digital age. When you think about it, much of your daily life is impacted by this field: it helps determine where stores are placed, where the buses go for their routes, where new outlying housing developments are built!
Film Making
As it stands, my time is divided pretty evenly between three activities: my research, my filmmaking, and my 'real' job. Yes, I'm also a filmmaker. I'm the founder of Celsius Studios[2], a film production company. I just released a documentary[3][4] on the subject of Internet piracy (aptly named "On Piracy"), and I'm currently working on a comedy[5]. The film making has led me to participate in panels at a number of conferences, including ISEA/ZeroOne[6] and HOPE[7].
Hobbies & Life
On the side, I enjoy all manner of things pertinent to computer security. I also enjoy writing articles for a variety of publications, when the opportunity arises, such as PCWorld[8] and 2600 Magazine. As none of the former activities generate any substantial revenue, I work full-time at a coffee shop. The money is then all spent on schooling (or making more films.) Ah yes, forgot to mention: I'm also a Physical Geography student (BSc. Honours) at the University of Ottawa.
It's a pretty hectic life!
