GingerLead Dog Support & Rehabilitation Harness

The GingerLead¹ is a soft, padded belly sling with a leash & handle to help dogs with weak hind legs walk. It’s ideal for senior or handicapped dogs needing some assistance with their balance or mobility, dogs suffering from arthritis, degenerative myelopathy or other debilitating conditions, or dogs recovering from knee, hip or back injuries or orthopedic surgery.

The premium dog sling has a soft inner lining, where it comes into contact with a dog’s skin or fur, and a durable exterior. It is easily used by passing the support sling under the belly and bringing the straps, which extend from each end of the support sling, together with the attached padded handle.

For additional control, a leash extends from the handle and connects to your dog’s collar or chest harness with a snap hook, just like any other leash. The straps that extend from the support sling and the leash are adjustable. The leash is also detachable.

GingerLead dog slings are available in all sizes for toy to giant breed dogs and are machine washable. The male support pad, which contains a cutout, is available in small, large and tall sizes. Male GingerLeads may also be used with female dogs.

GingerLeads are made in Colorado, USA.[1]

HISTORY

A golden retriever named Ginger, was adopted at 8 weeks old along with her littermate Wilson. At 4 months old, Ginger was struggling to keep up with her brother and over the next 2 months began to have trouble going up the stairs. At 6 months old, she was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia and underwent a triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO) on her right hip. Instructed to use a towel to support her surgically repaired hip, Ginger's handlers found it extremely difficult to control an excitable puppy with a bath towel. Navigating Ginger up and down stairs was especially challenging causing the handlers to frequently be off balance and concerned about Ginger's safety as well as their own. Nevertheless, Ginger recovered and was a happy dog again.    She enjoyed playing with Wilson, hiking, swimming and all activities dogs love. She would occasionally limp after playing hard, but would be fine after a few days.

In time, her occasional limp became a constant limp and seemed to worsen even after weeks of inactivity. A return trip to the orthopedic surgeon revealed a luxating patella on her back left knee, so surgery was performed once again.

After surgery a dog sling was provided, which was better than a towel; however, the handlers were unable to control Ginger. Her front legs were strong and she frequently wanted to run and jump, or dash down the stairs.  It was difficult to give her adequate support and restraint for her recovery.

Concerned that Ginger may injure her surgically repaired knee, a padded support sling was attached to her collar and the GingerLead was born. [2]

RECOMMENDED BY VETERINARIANS

“The unique design of GingerLead allows the human handler to give substantial support to the hindquarters of the dog while maintaining control of the front end, all with one hand. We deal with giant breed dogs, and have found that the GingerLead offers much greater support and control than any combination of slings, towels and leashes. It is especially valuable for young, exuberant dogs who might cause injury to a freshly operated joint without adequate control. Great product!” [3]
