Mexico – El Salvador [1] was one of the most valuable matches of the 1981 CONCACAF Championship. Also thanks to this victory, El Salvador eventually finished second in the table and qualified to the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Mexico only finished third and was eliminated. To date, this was the last time that Mexico didn’t qualify to the FIFA World Cup, apart from the ban due to the Cachirules scandal in 1990.
