The Korea Science Academy Science Fair(KSASF) is an annual event held in the middle of August in the Korea Science Academy(KSA), providing a chance for students who want to do self-directed research to research in an encouraging environment. The topic of the KSASF differs year by year. A great number of good research has been presented at this fair. In other words, the fair has been effective at motivating students to do research. Competitions are held in two sections, 'Research Project' and 'Science Essay' (domestic),'Science Inquiry' (international). Teams of 2 or 3 students participate in 'Research Project', while 'Science Essay' and 'Science Inquiry' is done individually.

In the case of the 2008 fair, winners of the competition got bonus points at the first step of the KSA freshman selection.[1]

The KSASF is sponsored by KAIST and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

Theme of KSASF

Environment and Energy

In the present century, humanity is suffering from dramatic global climate change with radical climate shift. The global environment and human life are in continuous danger because of various unexpected phenomenons such as earthquakes, tsunamis, massive flooding and droughts. To sustain their development, humans engage in fierce competition for secure resources. As a result, importance of environment and energy for human society is increasing.

Overcoming the mentioned difficulties and challenges for sustainable growth is necessary. So the festival encourages students to take interest in the significant issues directly related to human survival by participating in the KSASF. With diverse students from around the world, KSASF provides a venue for building friendships and for becoming aware of mankind's common issues and problems, and the competition further expects students to seek the solutions for overcoming these issues.[2]

Purpose of KSASF

KSASF, including domestic and international science fair, aims to provide students with an opportunity to exchange scientific ideas through friendly activities. Since 2011, the fair has been focusing on the theme of Environment and Energy. Participants are encouraged to display their leadership while carrying out scientific inquiries and sharing the latest issues concerning the environment and energy. They will also be given a chance to share their research results and to build friendship with other high school participants from around the world through creative and science-based experiences.[3]

Programs

Students' programs

The KSASF program for students are as follows.

Research Project Presentation (Poster and Oral Presentations)

Students work together on a research project on the theme of the Environment and Energy, and present the results. Presentation sesions are designated to encourage active discussion and expose students to various research models.

In terms of 2015 KSASF and 2016 KSASF, each team consists of 2 high school students, and 2 elementary or middle students from the same grade, respectively. When the KSASF is held internationally, a preliminary round is conducted to select 10 teams each from the Korean high school group and KSA(no preliminary round for participating teams from foreign high schools). In the case of the domestic KSASF, the preliminary round is conducted to select 20 and 25 teams each from the elementary school students and middle school students. At the final round, each team presents the results poster and oral presentations. Oral presentation is composed of 15 minutes presentation and 5 minutes Q&A. Each presentation is judged by two international juries.[4]

Science Essay (domestic)

At the preliminary round, students who want to participate in 'Science Essay' write and submit essays related to the topic 'Environment and Energy' twice. The preliminary round evaluates the essays’suitability, logicality, creativeness, and expressiveness. Then, it selects 20 students from the elementary school students and middle school students each. Students participating in the final round go to the KSA and write essays related to a topic that will be given that day.

Scientfic Inquiry (international)

Students who have successfully completed the research project engage in scientific inquiries on a given theme of Earth, Environment and Energy(EEE).

During registration, students are assigned to teams of 4~5 members. Each team consists of 2 international students and 2~3 local students. Students listen to instructions given by the teacher-in-charge and carry out activities in a theme-related location. Students resolve challenging issues related to the environment and energy. The teacher-in-charge evaluates students’inquiry process, research notes, and presentation of results.[5]

Science Experiment Activity

Through this program, KSASF provide the place to exchange knowledge and special science experiment only in KSA. Members of the team talk about the solution of the given topic, and it runs as a competition between teams. There are some souvenirs for the winners, instead of rewards.

Guest lecture of renowned scientists

In the festival, KSA provides lectures about topics similar to the theme of the festival, in order to increase interest about the topics and cultivate their spirit of inquiry. By providing the opportunities of listening to the lectures of experts one are interested in, this program provides chances for students to develop their vision about their future and foster characteristics of a scientist.

School Tour

In the festival, KSA students introduce their school by School's current situation, School tour, Q&A time, etc. Participants can share the information of the talent and character that science-gifted students should have.

Field Trip & Busan City Tour (international)

Students can engage in a hands-on experience of environmental activities related to the theme, and they can also visit attractions in Busan.

Opening & Farewell Ceremony

The opening ceremony will be attended by participants of the elementary and middle school programs. Students will have the chance to introduce themselves and experience diverse cultures.

KSA student helpers and participants should participate at the party directly, with KSA student helpers leading the party. Every participants would share their experiments and promote friendships.

Korea traditional culture program (international)

Teachers' programs

The KSASF program for teachers are as follows.[6]

KSA Forum, Teachers' conference

This conference would provide an opportunity for participating schools to exchange information on science education programs or curriculum.

Principal's Meeting

This schedule is designated to promote mutual cooperation and exchange ideas of schools’ curriculum by conducting a meeting with all principal. They would exchange ideas on hosting such a successful international event.
