Educational Advertising

Educational Advertising first began in America during the World War II. It was first introduced by radio broadcasters, and advertisers by promoting war efforts and ultimately, propaganda[1]. Educational advertising, also considered public service announcments[2], have made a major impact in society and history. Having advertisements that educate the people, is helpful in various aspects, but mostly helps spread the word of an important cause or event to the masses of people at one time. Today, educational advertising can range from non-profitable organizations to political campaigns. [1]

Example

Educational advertising can also help promote different charitable causes. One example of this would be the SPCA and their current advertising campaign. The SPCA is an international organization that helps raise awareness of the abuse of animals, as well as teach proper fostering care of animals. The SPCA is known for its shelter care of abused or abandoned animals, as well as its adoption program. This organization reaches out to viewers by different advertising campaigns, one including a commercial featuring singer and song writer Sarah Mclachlan.

In this commercial, different images of SPCA dogs or cats are shown and a song by this artist is played in the background. At the end of the commercial, Mclachlan encourages viewers to support the SPCA with either adoption or donations. This commercial is effective upon viewers because it approaches the cause with an emotional stand point, making viewers feel sympathy for the animals and wanting to make a difference or help out with this organization. Overall, this commercial is a great example of an educational advertisement because it promotes a charitable cause to viewers, and educates viewers about an important issue in society.
