Anjali Appadurai is a Canadian climate activist and politician serving as the Climate Justice Lead for the Sierra Club BC and an Organiser for the Climate Emergency Unit. She founded the Padma Center for Climate Justice. She was the NDP candidate in the 2021 Canadian federal election[1]

Policy

  • Appadurai has criticized John Horgan on his Fairy Creek old-growth logging actions saying “I believe in the values of the [NDP], and this is out of line with those values”.
  • Appadurai has been a supporter of Universal Pharmacare.
  • Appadurai supports building more affordable housing units and increasing the Home Buyer’s Tax Credit.
  • Appadurai supports limiting barriers to post secondary education.[2][3][4]


Her speech, in part, ran:

I speak for more than half the world’s population. We are the silent majority. You've given us a seat in this hall, but our interests are not on the table. What does it take to get a stake in this game? Lobbyists? Corporate influence? Money? You’ve been negotiating all my life. In that time, you've failed to meet pledges, you've missed targets, and you've broken promises. But you’ve heard this all before. [ending with:] Mandela said, "It always seems impossible, until it’s done." So, distinguished delegates and governments around the world, governments of the developed world, deep cuts now. Get it done.[5]
