Melvin Hoare is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Leeds, England.[1][2] He specialises in the formation of massive stars, radio astronomy and development in Africa.[3] Hoare founded and leads the Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA) project, as well as related projects such as DARA Big Data, which provide training to radio astronomers in Africa.[4][5][6]

Education and Research

Hoare was awarded a PhD in astrophysics from the University College London and from then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany.[7] In 1996, Hoare joined the University of Leeds as Professor of Astrophysics. He has contributed to over 80 articles related to astronomy and star formation.[8] As well as leading DARA, Hoare is Chair of the Consortium of Universities for Goonhilly Astronomy (CUGA).[9][10] CUGA works with Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd in the UK, to convert their radar dishes into radio telescopes.[9]

The Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy (DARA)

DARA is a development project to train astronomers in high-tech and entrepreneurial skills.[4][11] This is done to promote economic development in Africa. DARA was founded by Hoare in 2014 and as of 2022 DARA supplies training to eight countries: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zambia.[12] DARA takes advantage of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a large array radio-telescopes which operate in these countries.[12][13] This is supported by Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd and also the Newton Fund, which builds partnerships with countries to support economic growth through research and innovation.[14] Hoare and DARA emphasise DARA's potential for economic growth and applicable skills to other sectors, with related projects such as DARA Big Data.[5]

In 2018, DARA was awarded the Better Satellite World Awards by Space & Satellite Professionals International.[15][16] At the time, DARA had trained 140 students in STEM and networking-based skills.[17]

In 2022, Hoare was awarded for the Royal Astronomical Society: Higher Education Award for the founding of DARA and its continued development.[18]
