Biography

In the interests of being transparent about any potential conflicts of interest, I have written a Wikipedia-style biography of myself. This will also highlight the fact that it's not a good idea to ever write a Wiki bio on yourself, as this is very much self-promotional.

Earl Andrew Washburn (born August 14, 1986) is a Canadian Wikipedia admin and pollster from Ottawa. He is currently employed as a senior analyst for EKOS Research Associates.

Washburn was born at the Riverside Hospital in Ottawa to parents of mostly Irish, English and German descent. He was raised in the Riverview neighbourhood of the city, and attended elementary school at Riverview Public School and Vincent Massey Public School. He went to secondary school at Hillcrest High School, graduating in 2004. Following that, he attended Carleton University, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in political science, with a concentration in Canadian politics in 2009.

While attending Carleton, Washburn began working with EKOS at first in their call centre. He was promoted as a programmer in 2012, later becoming a senior analyst. With EKOS, Washburn is known for being the primary investigator for the company's election seat predictions. He has been quoted by The Hill Times[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], the Toronto Star[10][11], the Ottawa Citizen[12], L'actualité, [13] and has been profiled in his local neighbourhood paper, The Riverview Park Review. [14]

Prior to working full time with EKOS, Washburn was politically involved with the New Democratic Party (NDP). He interned in the offices of Peter Julian and Bruce Hyer, two NDP Members of Parliament. He also worked on local election campaigns at all three-levels of government.

After trying the site out by vandalizing a few articles, Washburn began editing Wikipedia as a serious editor as a high school student in 2003. He became a site administrator in 2004. Since then, he has helped start the Ottawa and curling Wikipedia projects. His work on Wikipedia has led to interviews with CBC Radio, The Curling News, Vice.com[15] and ESPN.[16]

Outside of work and Wikipedia, Washburn enjoys the sport of curling. He is a member of the Ottawa Curling Club, where he was a member of the club championship winning team in 2019.

Washburn has been in a common-law relationship since 2009, and has one daughter. They live in Ottawa's Lower Town neighbourhood.
