User:DuncanHill/IP Block problem

This is copied from an old version of my talk page and preserved here for future reference. I think the same problem has cropped up since for other editors, so it may be helpful to have an easily-findable record.

Help me!

Can't log in on my desktop, tried resetting password, it says "you cannot reset user's passwords because you are blocked globally" Haven't had any kind of Block notice. DuncanHill (talk) 13:42, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Right. But what happens when you try to edit a page? What you've provided does not give us enough information to find the block affecting you, but if you try to edit a page, you should get more information. --Yamla (talk) 14:08, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

I can edit ANI logged in on my phone. DuncanHill (talk) 14:10, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

OK it's a rangel block 188.29.164.0/23 by Tegel on 14 July. I thought I was globally IP block exempt. DuncanHill (talk) 14:12, 19 August 2018 (UTC) See my edits at Meta. https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/15507303 DuncanHill (talk) 14:16, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

  • That's weird, not only are you IP block exempt, but the range block itself is a soft block, meaning that it does not prohibit logged-in users from editing. So the block should not actually be affecting you at all, but the software is prohibiting you from resetting your password anyway. Swarm 14:55, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)The global block is anonymous only, so already there you should be able to login to your account and edit. On top of that you have a global IP block exempt to your account, so I don't know what else there is to do. Since you can edit outside of this talk page you're not affected by the global block. There might be a bug in the software that prevent you from resetting your password from a blocked IP-address, but that is nothing that I can solve. -- Tegel (talk) 14:58, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
So if I get logged out of my phone I'll never be able to edit again. Well thank you very much! DuncanHill (talk) 15:00, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
No. Try it again with local IPBE, which I have just granted. If that doesn't work, I'll try locally unblocking the range. If that doesn't work, we'll ask meta to temporarily unblock the range so that you can reset your password, and then report the bug to the sysadmins. Swarm 15:04, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Makes no difference still get the same message. DuncanHill (talk) 15:06, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Help me

Can anyone help with the above? The instructions at unblock-auto don't make sense as they ask me to copy messages I don't get. DuncanHill (talk) 14:55, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

  • I've enabled local IP block exemption on your account to see if that makes a difference. Give it another try and let me know if it works. Swarm 15:00, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
No I still get the cannot reset because blocked globally message. DuncanHill (talk) 15:02, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I've tried disabling the global block on enwiki. Try one more time. Swarm 15:06, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Right, am back in on desktop thank you! Have logged out and back in on phone too with new password. DuncanHill (talk) 15:10, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Awesome! Swarm 15:11, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks again - the worrying thing is if I hadn't been logged in on my phone I would have had no way of editing anywhere to request help, and no way to use the email function to contact an admin (OK, I do have emails from a few admins I could reply to, but most people won't). The messages about being globally blocked contained no information about the block at all (except that it was global) and no information about how to appeal it or ask for help. The way it was worded ("you are blocked globally") implies that it was me, not the IP, that was blocked. DuncanHill (talk) 15:15, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

That is concerning. I'll try to report this incident to the appropriate people. To be clear, could you have logged in on your desktop and edited with the old password? Or did you simply forget your old password? Swarm 15:21, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
I think I must have mis-typed the password. When I do that, rather than get myself in a faff trying to be sure I'm remembering the right password I just re-set to a new one. I've done this before with no problems. Clicked on "forgot password", filled out the form, and got told I was globally blocked. As you can imagine, this rather worried me! DuncanHill (talk) 15:25, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
When I did try to edit a page when logged out, I got the message about the range block, and instructions to contact Tegel or make the request at Meta - both of which are impossible for a globally blocked IP! The instructions at unblock-auto asked me to copy-paste messages I didn't seem to be receiving, so I couldn't fill that out properly. DuncanHill (talk) 15:29, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes that's a worrying situation. One more question, did you try to reset your password via mobile? Or were you just afraid to log out? Swarm 15:34, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
No, only on the desktop. Didn't dare log out of mobile! My desktop connects via mobile tethering, so the IP is presumably the same for both. DuncanHill (talk) 15:36, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I made a report at the MediaWiki support desk. Feel free to comment there. Swarm 16:20, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
Looks good, I've watchlisted that. Thanks again for all your help, it really is appreciated. DuncanHill (talk) 16:31, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
