Gina Dowding is the Green Party prospective parliamentary candidate for the Lancaster and Fleetwood constituency and former Green Councillor.

Gina was born in London, before moving to Lancashire after completing a First Class Honours Degree at Trent Polytechnic.[1]

Career before politics

Prior to beginning a career in the political field Gina worked in the National Health Service for ten years including roles in the promotion of Women's health and Prison development.[2]

Local politics

Founding member of the Lancaster Green Party in 1986. Served as local party Chair.

First elected to represent Castle Ward in Lancaster during the 1999 Local Elections.

After serving for four years as a representative of Castle Ward, then decided to run as councillor for Duke's Ward. Elected with a majority of 45% over the nearest challenger.[3]

Chaired a variety of committee's within the council including the Local Strategic Partnership and the Sustainability Partnership.[4]

Served as deputy leader of the North West Green Party.[5]

National politics

Dowding was confirmed as the offical Green Party candidate for the Lancaster and Fleetwood election that will occur on May 6, 2010.[6]

Controversy

In 2003 Dowding was suspended from council meetings for three months after revealing information about a council decision to defer tax payments to Heysham nuclear power station. [7] [8] The revalation made its way to the European Commission after it was pursued by Green MEP Caroline Lucas. The Commission ruled that the deferral constituted "unlawful state aid".[9]
