An avoyer ([Schultheiß] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) was a magistrate of the Middle Ages that represented a lord and given the authority on his behalf, to apply High, middle and low justice. [1] .

In Switzerland

In Confederation of cantons XIII, income avoyer is attested in the cities of Lucerne (where it replaces the [Amman ] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) in 1304), Bern, Freiburg and Solothurn [1]. In all four cities, the role of avoyer gradually changes during the time he first became President of the Executive and the Court of town, before becoming, from the fifteenth century the equivalent of Mayor German cities or north-eastern Switzerland [2]. He is elected by the Parliament at the same time as the other magistrates, in several cities, two avoyers are elected (one reserve) every two years with unlimited [3].

Load and gradually disappear as avoyer different cantons during the Confederation XXII cantons. Title avoyer however, is still carried by the chairman of the Council of State of canton of Lucerne [4].
