Pi Kappa Phi, Delta Iota Chapter

National History

Pi Kappa Phi (ΠΚΦ; also Pi Kapp) is an American Greek Letter secret and social fraternity. It was founded by Andrew Alexander Kroeg Jr., Lawrence Harry Mixson, and Simon Fogarty Jr. on December 10, 1904 at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. The fraternity presently has 179 active chapters (160 chartered chapters and 19 associate chapters), an average chapter size of 55, and more than 113,000 initiated members. Pi Kappa Phi operates its own philanthropy, Push America, which works with individual chapters to serve people with disabilities. Push America hosts a number of national events including Journey of Hope, a 4,100-mile bicycle ride across the United States, and Build America, a traveling construction team around the U.S. to camps that help children with disabilities. Both raise money and awareness for people with disabilities

Local History

Original Chartering

The original Delta Iota Chapter Chartering happened February 24, 1973 under chartering archon and Delta Iota #1 James R. “Jim” Trammel. Among brothers of this original chapter are John Peden (ΔI #4), Gary Mathis (ΔI #20) and Phil Brooks (ΔI #28), all of whom are still active in the fraternity today.

The chapter was forced to close down in 1980 for multiple reasons. Largely, the chapter was not able to recruit sufficiently. The charter remained, but the light of fraternal life remained dormant for over 2 decades.

Recolonizing

During the Fall 2002 semester, the local fraternity “2FF” was created by several guys who lived in the second floor of Felder Honors Dormitories. This consisted of a group of guys with a strong common bond who possessed the will to be a part of Greek life, but didn’t care for any fraternity on campus

Expansive consultants Kenny Obre and Mike Kudravitz sold the idea of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity to a few members of 2FF and would-be founding fathers and created an interest group.

Once the process was ready to begin, the interest group became an Associate Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi, as granted by Mark Timmes, CEO, and was directly under the jurisdiction of Chartering Consultant Matt Hunt.

At the beginning, the executive council consisted of the following:

  • Archon – Tommy McNeil
  • Vice Archon – Jesse Phillips
  • Treasurer – Adam Dutton
  • Secretary – Joey Scavone
  • Warden – Nate Snell
  • Historian – Scott Davidson
  • Chaplain – Brian Westerman

And thus began an Associate Member period of almost 2 years. The Associate Chapter we forced to do multiple things to be chartered, including strict recruitment and GPA guidelines, community service and leadership on campus

Rechartering

When it was finally time to charter, brothers from the Gamma Delta Chapter at the University of Memphis and the Alpha Sigma Chapter at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville lent their support.

After the 2 year Associate Member process, the Delta Iota chapter was founded on November 7, 2003 and all of the founding fathers were initiated as full-fledged brothers. A Chartering Banquet was held in which Chartering officer and past national president J. Patrick Figley and Assistant Charting Officer and Regional Governor Alan Patrick Deusterhaus presented the founding fathers with their charter. The Chartering Executive Council consisted of:

  • Archon: Joey Scavone – ΔI #81
  • Vice Archon: Cal Majure – ΔI #89
  • Treasurer: Jon Campbell – ΔI # 77
  • Secretary: Jeff Skaggs – ΔI # 96
  • Warden: Frank Crowder – ΔI #87
  • Historian: Scott Davidson – ΔI # 78
  • Chaplain: Andrew Moss – ΔI #88

The number ΔI #76, the lowest number given to a re-founding father, was given to our fallen brother Matthew Holt. Matthew was killed in a plane crash during summer break 2003. In his remembrance, he was alumni-initiated with the other founding fathers and was given the equivalent number to ΔI #1.
