Patrick Le Tallec is a mathematician born on the 4th of August 1954, and is known for is work in mathematical physics in the domain of computational mechanics.

Biography

Former student of l'École Polytechnique (X1973), and of l'École nationale des ponts et chaussées (1978), Patrick Le Tallec[1] is currently a professor of mechanics at the Polytechnic Institute of Paris.

Under the direction of John Tinsley Oden, Patrick Le Tallec obtains a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. During his studies in Austin, he is an assistant researcher to the department of mechanical engineering.

Committed to serve the discipline of mathematics at the "laboratorie central des poets et chaussées" (1980-1988), Patrick Le Tallec also takes on the role of professor invited at the Mathematics Research Center & Computer Science Department at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (1983-1984). It is during this period that he defended his doctorate in mathematical sciences at the University of Paris IV.

Keeping an interest in teaching, from 1988 to 1999, Patrick Le Tallec was an applied mathematics professor at the Paris Dauphine University. During this period he also was the Research Director at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation where he leads the MENUSIN and M3N projects (1994-1997).

Years after, Le Tallec occupied the position of vice-president at l'École Polytechnique where he was in charge of education (1999-2004).

Over the end of his mandate he became a professor at l'Ecole polyechnique where he occupied the chair Andre-Citroen in 2011[2]. He is also responsible of the department of mechanics, energetics and proceeds, at the Paris-Saclay University since 2014[3]. He directs laboratories of mechanics and solids (CNRS UMR7649) since 2010[4] and participates in the workings of the INRIA/Polytechnique team named: 'Mathematical and Medical Modelling with Data Interaction in Medicine'[5].

Undertaking since 2021 the role of dean of the Bachelor Program[6] at l'École Polytechnique, Patrick Le Tallec succeeds Claire Lenz.

Works

His work in structural mechanics focuses on computational methods in the non-linear domain, fluid-structure coupling, multi-scale and multi-material problems. In fluid mechanics, he is interested in rarefied flows, multi-scale problems and shape optimization[7]. More recently, his studies focus on the dynamic identification of biological structures.
