Pipe Flow Software[1] is a computer software company that develops, licenses and supports several software programs that calculate flow rates and pressure drops of non-compressible liquids and compressible gases in pipes. Their products are used worldwide[2] by pipe system designers and hydraulic engineers to design, analyse and solve complex systems.[3]

History

Pipe Flow Software was founded by David Gardiner in 1994 and the first software program, then called “Pipe Flow 3D”, was released in 1997. David holds a Joint Honours Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and previously worked on the design and development of software for the Hinkley Point B Nuclear Power Station. His father John Gardiner was previoulsy Technical Director of Moducel, a company that designed, manufactured, and installed industrial air conditioning units. Working together, their combined software and technical expertise lead to the development of further computer programs for mechanical engineers and pipe system designers. In January 2002, Pipe Flow Software launched a website at www.pipeflow.co.uk to provide digital distribution of their software programs and by 2004 the website was enabled for E-commerce transactions. Pipe Flow Software’s flagship Microsoft Windows application, Pipe Flow Expert, was released in 2006. In 2009, with a growing international customer base, Pipe Flow Software launched www.pipeflow.com, and today their website serves users in over 100 countries worldwide.

Pipe Flow Expert Software

Pipe Flow Expert is a software application for designing complex piping systems and analysing the flow of non-compressible liquids or compressible gases throughout a network of pipes[4]. It was first released in 2006. The software calculates fluid flow rates in both open and closed loop pipe networks. The systems can contain multiple supply tanks, multiple discharge points, multiple pumps in series or in parallel, and multiple pipe sizes & fittings .

Non-compressible liquid calculations are performed using the Darcy-Weisbach equation with Colebrook-White friction factors. Compressible gas flow calculations are performed using a selected compressible flow equation. The software supports the General Fundamental Isothermal Flow equation, the Weymouth equation, the Panhandle A and B equations, and others. Pipe Flow Expert version 8 was released in 2023 and is available for Microsoft Windows (PC).

Pipe Flow Expert is available to download as a free trial[5] and Pipe Flow Software donates licences for educational purposes.[6][7][8]

Pipe Flow Wizard Software

Pipe Flow Wizard is a software program that performs calculations on a single run of the same size pipe. It calculates pressure losses, flow rates, minimum size diameters, and maximum pipe lengths, for a set of specified conditions. It provides 'What if?' calculations on both non-compressible liquids and compressible gases flowing through a pipe between a start and end elevation[9]. It also supports friction loss calculations for fittings within the pipe run, such as valves and bends. The program was first released in 2004 for Microsoft Windows (PC). In 2020, the Pipe Flow Wizard software was made available on multiple platforms including Microsoft Windows (PC), macOS (Apple Mac) and iOS (iPhone and iPad)[10].

Pipe Flow Wizard is available to download as a free trial[5].

Pipe Flow Advisor Software

Pipe Flow Advisor is a simple utility program that models flow in open channels of different shapes and part filled closed channels of different shapes[11]. It was first released in 2005. The application also estimates discharge flow rate from a tank. It supports a variety of tank shapes and calculates the tank empty time under flow due to gravity. The Pipe Flow Advisor Software is available for Microsoft Windows (PC).

Pipe Flow Advisor is available to download as a free trial[5].

Convert 123 Software

Convert 123 is a unit conversation calculation tool that converts between hundreds of different units of length, area, mass, weight, flow rate, volume, power, pressure, temperature and more[12]. It was first released in 2007. The Convert 123 software is available for Microsoft Windows (PC) and can be white labeled with a custom logo[13].

Convert 123 is available to download as a free trial[5].

Publications

In 2006, Pipe Flow Software collaborated with the British Pump Manufacturers Association and Europump, on a technical publication named 'A Guide to System Efficiency for Rotodyanmic Pump Systems'. Pipe Flow Software also provided a Microsoft Windows program called 'Pipe Flow Energy' that compared energy efficiency for flow rates in different size pipes, which was described in section 10 of the guide. The software was distributed on CD within each guide and made available for download from www.pipeflow.co.uk.[14][15]
