The Elder Financial Protection Network (EFPN) is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 designed to raise community awareness and provide education on the topic of elder financial abuse[1].Based in San Francisco, EFPN is the primary provider of elder financial abuse prevention programs in the state of California. Working with more than 400 financial institutions, adult social services, law enforcement agencies, legal agencies and community groups, EFPN has provided education for more than 20,000 seniors and made 60 million media impressions over a ten year period [2].

Activities

EFPN regularly provides “Be Wise” community education events all around California, in partnership with financial institutions, law enforcement agencies, and social service agencies. These programs (translated into many languages including Korean, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese) are designed to educate seniors on the warning signs and dangers of financial abuse[3].These events have reached over 20,000 seniors over the last 10 years, and have lead to numerous successful interventions and increased incident reporting statewide, resulting in the prevention of millions of dollars in losses to California seniors. EFPN also provides staff training programs, designed to educate professionals in the financial industry, social services, legal enforcement and legal services sector on the dangers of financial abuse and its prevention[4].

Call to Action

EFPN holds an annual Call to Action event in San Francisco which brings together hundreds of professionals representing financial institutions, law enforcement, social services, elder justice advocates and the legal community to share best practices on preventing financial abuse. The Call to Action Summit 2010 featured Philip Marshall, grandson of Brooke Astor as the keynote speaker, and garnered widespread attention from the Bay Area media[5].

EFPN has gained a significant number of awards and endorsements as the primary provider of elder financial abuse prevention programs in the state of California. EFPN has:

  • Received the FDIC Chairman's Award for Innovation in Financial Education [6].
  • Obtained key endorsements and commendations from numerous elected officials including the California State Attorney General, California State Treasurer, United States Speaker of the House and several statewide professional associations[7].
